Honor killing in Australia

Do you like this story?

A Young teenage girl told her parents she was leaving Islam and converting to Christianity. When her Father then tries to kill her, he ends up in a battle with the mother who apparently stepped in and tried to save her daughter. The Mother ended up dead and the father in critical condition, with stabs to the heart himself. Once again, Islam shows it’s brutality. No doubt there will be cousins or uncles coming along soon to try and take back the family’s honor. Better keep the girl under a close watch.

A RELIGIOUS feud between a Muslim father and his teenage daughter may have sparked a bloody domestic dispute on the Gold Coast which left the man’s wife dead and him fighting for life in hospital.

Police are investigating suggestions the violence erupted after the 17-year-old girl told her father she wanted to opt out of the Islamic faith and convert to Christianity. The girl’s mother is believed to have stepped in to protect her daughter, only to be fatally stabbed with a kitchen knife.

Neighbours reported hearing “blood-curdling” screams before the hysterical girl ran half-naked from their Southport home unit covered in scratches.

Police later found the body of the girl’s mother, 41, inside the blood-smeared unit. Her husband was taken to the Gold Coast Hospital with a stab wound to the chest. He was last night in a critical condition under police guard.

Neighbour Caitlin Dalton was taking out the rubbish about 7pm on Monday when she heard “loud, huge, terrifying screams” coming from the unit complex.

“She (the teenager) was yelling, ‘Help me, help me, they’re trying to kill me’,” Ms Dalton said. “Everybody heard the screams but we couldn’t work out which unit they were coming from. Then this girl emerged in the stairwell hysterical and crying.

”Her clothes had been ripped off, she was just in her underwear and she had quite severe scratches down her arm and across her back.”

I am just now reading this. When it was happening, I was living and working in Jordan on the “honor” killings situation there.

These crimes actually pre-date Islam, so it is unfair to blame the faith. In fact, Islam does not condone these crimes. They are believed to have their origins in misinterpretations of pre-Islamic Arab tribal codes. Nonetheless, it is the case that, of the estimated 5,000 “honor” killings committed per annum (i.e., the UN’s estimate), the overwhelming majority of them occur in Arab/Muslim countries and in Arab/Muslim immigrant communities elsewhere. So there is a correlation, but no causality.

Sadly, not enough is being done to address and prevent these wholesale murders of girls and women.

I am trying to get a handle on this matter of honor killings.  From my brief investigation it seems to cross cultural and national boundaries, but is heavily represented in Islamic communities.  My question is why has medieval Arab tribal culture  (even if it is pre-Islamic) regarding honor killings been sustained over the centuries as well as permeated other cultures where this is not generally accepted by the majority culture?

BTW – honor killings still occur in Upper Egyptian villages among Christian communities.

@Priali: show me one instance where a Christian murdered their own family member to “preserve their honor”. It’s simply not true

You did not address my real questions.  Do you have information?

We have LOTS of information, it can be found on this site. Why did you not answer Infidelesto??? It is here, in the various posts by him, and me, regarding honor killings perpetrated by muslims, in both muslim countries and in the West. Instead of dodging his question, ANSWER it, provide us an article on an honor killing where islam isn’t involved. We will gladly write it up.
