He told me a story about one of his 'kills' (plane he shot down) that was not witnessed by another Allied pilot. When he returned to base he was told that the only way he could get credit was to get proof. <br><br>As the plane had been shot down near the base he and another pilot went out to the site. While there he scoured the plane for evidence (and trophies) and to his dismay found that the engine in the MiG was manufactured by none other than GE. He removed the ID plate from the engine and took it back with him, along with his other evidence. <br><br>Once back at the base the engine's identification caused quite an understandable upset amongst the other pilots. The commanding officer demanded answers and the controversy went up the food chain. The situation got so out of hand that the base went to lock down and high level Pentagon officials (and I seem to remember him saying a US Senator) came in to investigate. As he told it, no one was allowed to leave until the ID plate was retrieved and the evidence destroyed.<br><br>It has been almost 30 years since I heard this but I am remembering the basics fairly accurately. Of course veracity depends on the minister's account alone as there was no one to corroborate.
