MSM: NBC's Arkin says US troops are paid 'mercenaries'

Do you like this story?

He actually blogged about it on WashingtonPost’s blog, but is a Military Analyst for NBC and holds high positions of opinion. For GE, NBC and the Washington Post to have a guy like this in a position of his stature on a major broadcast network, is just ethically wrong. To claim that our soldiers are ‘hired mercenaries’ coming from main stream media is a total outrage.

Here’s what he had to say:

These soldiers should be grateful that the American public, which by all polls overwhelmingly disapproves of the Iraq war and the President’s handling of it, do still offer their support to them, and their respect.

Through every Abu Ghraib and Haditha, through every rape and murder, the American public has indulged those in uniform, accepting that the incidents were the product of bad apples or even of some administration or command order.

Sure it is the junior enlisted men who go to jail, but even at anti-war protests, the focus is firmly on the White House and the policy. We just don’t see very man “baby killer” epithets being thrown around these days, no one in uniform is being spit upon.

So, we pay the soldiers a decent wage, take care of their families, provide them with housing and medical care and vast social support systems and ship obscene amenities into the war zone for them, we support them in every possible way, and their attitude is that we should in addition roll over and play dead, defer to the military and the generals and let them fight their war, and give up our rights and responsibilities to speak up because they are above society?

I can imagine some post-9/11 moment, when the American people say enough already with the wars against terrorism and those in the national security establishment feel these same frustrations. In my little parable, those in leadership positions shake their heads that the people don’t get it, that they don’t understand that the threat from terrorism, while difficult to defeat, demands commitment and sacrifice and is very real because it is so shadowy, that the very survival of the United States is at stake. Those Hoover’s and Nixon’s will use these kids in uniform as their soldiers. If I weren’t the United States, I’d say the story end with a military coup where those in the know, and those with fire in their bellies, save the nation from the people.

But it is the United States and instead this NBC report is just an ugly reminder of the price we pay for a mercenary – oops sorry, volunteer – force that thinks it is doing the dirty work.

I Don't know who this Arkin is but I think he is just as stupid as they come. People( if you wish to call them that) Should SENT TO LIVE IN ANOTHER COUNTRY . IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE AMERICAN TROOPS THIS ARKIN WOULD NOT EVER BE ABLE TO SAY THINGS LIKE THIS. BUT AS FAR AS I CAN SEE OUR SO CALL AMERICAN PRESIDENT IS DOING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ANY GOOD. BUT HE IS PRETTY GOOD AT KISSING ASS ALL OVER THE GLOBE, IN EVERY COUNTRY THAT HAS DONE NOTHING FOR THE USA, BUT TRY TO DESTROY US.

Outrageous…deceitful. That's what I do expect from such a leftist
    news outlet.

The worst part of it,it actually represent the MAINSTREAM MEDIA's
rationale.Suddenly thinking like people such “Hanoi” Jane Fonda became
fashionable, what seriously spoils any attempt to do a DECENT job as a
    journalist.

New York Times's INFAMOUS cartoon depicting the Statue of Liberty
holding a WHIP in her hand in order to falsely accuse America as a
whole as a TORTURER's lair,it's UNBECOMING to any serious journalist
    as well.

I watch FOX NEWS because I can't whitstand such diatribes on a
    daily basis.

I would almost like to think that this Arkin's next report reads like this:-
“I'm talking to you as a captured spy and dirty American infidel pig. These masked men holding this machete to my throat will kill me if $1,000,000 isn't delivered, along with all political prisoners in the next 48hours.Please do as they say…..they mean business”.
    Fade to black.

In the church I attended when I was much younger there preached a man that once served as a pilot in the Korean War (“Conflict?”). He told me a story about one of his 'kills' (plane he shot down) that was not witnessed by another Allied pilot. When he returned to base he was told that the only way he could get credit was to get proof.

As the plane had been shot down near the base he and another pilot went out to the site. While there he scoured the plane for evidence (and trophies) and to his dismay found that the engine in the MiG was manufactured by none other than GE. He removed the ID plate from the engine and took it back with him, along with his other evidence.

Once back at the base this caused quite an understandable upset amongst the other pilots. The commanding officer demanded answers and the controversy went up the food chain. The situation got so out of hand that the base went to lock down and high level Pentagon officials (and I seem to remember him saying a US Senator) came in to investigate. As he told it, no one was allowed to leave until the ID plate was retrieved and the evidence destroyed.

It has been almost 30 years since I heard this but I am remembering the basics fairly accurately. Of course veracity depends on the minister's account alone as there was no one to corroborate.
