I have never seen such an incompetent Secretary of State. Go back to dealing with Soviet era politics, middle eastern politics just ain’t your thing.
American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice apparently has condoned contacts with Hamas, which the American government has boycotted, the French news agency AFP reported. She concluded her visit to the Middle East Wednesday with a press conference at which she stated the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Israel would resume negotiations that the PA had suspended. She avoided using the term “ceasefire,” and the PA took pains to state that the U.S. was not involved in the negotiations.
However, it was clear that Secretary Rice condoned the contacts with Hamas. Abbas thanked the U.S. for its “effort…to bring about a reciprocal truce with the help of Egypt.” He added, “I spoke today again with Secretary of State Rice and she will send an envoy, David Welch, to Cairo where intense efforts are being deployed with a view to reaching a truce.”
