It’s vital to understand the underlining theology of Islam. The following is a re-post from last year, but since there are hundreds of new readers here at IAC, I’m re-posting this with more reference links this time.

Muslims have been dreaming about a Caliphate that can unite the entire Muslim world and rule with strict Islamic code ever since the death of Muhammed. There have been coups, countercoups and civil wars because of disagreements over wether or not to install the Caliph.

The dream of a caliphate is what is responsible for the Shia-Sunni split. Several Caliphates existed over time until 1924 when Mustafa Kamal Ataturk abolished the Ottoman Caliphate and established the secular Turkish Republic.

Al-Qaeda has clearly stated that the re-establishing the Caliphate is one of its primary objectives. Although Al-Qaeda has taken the violent path to realize their dream of the massive Islamic empire, there are many Islamic groups all across the world that use politics to gain influence; Tanzeem-al-Islami and Hizb ut-Tahrir to name a few.

What exactly is a Caliphate?

A caliphate is the Islamic form of government representing the political unity and leadership of the Muslim world. The head of state (Caliph) has a position based on the notion of a successor to Muhammad’s political authority. It is a dream that has never been realized by Muslims and it will never be.

There will always be Muslims who dream about this empire and on the other hand the power-hungry leaders will prevent any movement that could dissolve their nation-state. Therefore, Muslims are stuck in an eternal conflict between Islamists and nationalists.

What are the goals of this Caliphate?

Besides uniting the Muslims, the goal is to arrange a massive army and call for Jihad against infidel states for the expansion of the Caliphate. Various caliphates have used this strategy to expand their states. The rapid Islamic expansion during the reign of the Caliphs is nothing but staggering.

The reason behind that is millions of eager men willingly joining the fight with the Infidels bacause they believe that Allah will reward them heftily if they die. There has never been a shortage of recruits in the army. This is the same reason there is no shortage of suicide bombers today.

The ultimate goal of the Caliphate would be to bring every square inch of this planet under Islam and convert/subdue all remaining Infidels.

Who are behind this movement?

Various groups around the world are actively advocating the creation of the Caliphate. Surprisingly, the most vocal of these groups, Hizb ut-Tahrir, is based in the UK and other countries in Western Europe and Australia. Just last year, thousands of Muslims gathered in a Khilafat conference to show support for the future Caliphate in Jakarta, Indonesia. The growing support for this empire all over the world is evident.

So what does the future hold? A massive Islamic empire where outspoken voices, homosexuals and other “immoral” people will executed on a regular basis? A fascist empire expanding itself bit-by-bit through demographic conquest, like we’re seeing in modern day Europe? The West having to constantly defend itself from Islamic aggression?

If we don’t wake up to this threat, the future looks gloomy.

    These worthless diatribes by some towel head with the loong winded name that sounds like a constipated camel clearing it's throat, are beginning to bore the hell out of me. Let this serve notice that there never was a dude by the name of mohammad who could make a decent pimple on my dog's ass, much less mine, nor has there ever been a muz that was worth more than a dead fly. All the koran is good for is fire kindling or wiping paper for the outhouse. Muz fighters are piss poor and that's why they use roadside bombs instead of trying to fight straight up with US troops. Muz fighters are pitiful pukes only good for target practice. God willing, at some time in the near future, muz will be declared as fair game and it's open season, then all I have to worry about is "how far to lead the target". If it was up to me, the Gaza strip would be uninhabited because all would be removed to Saudi Arabia, whether they (or the saudis) like it. Same goes for all of hezbulla. Lebanese get help reclaiming Lebanon and all foreigners get removed....again to saudi arabis, whether they , or the sauds like it or not. Let the muz take care of muz. All muz, native or foreign would be removed from the US unless they sign an oath and prove themselves to be loyal to the US Constitution. Any resistance gets the resistor a bullet in the brain pan. That should give any muz dickweed the idea of how distant the chance of "converting me to islam" might be and how futile the long winded and "bore me to death and waste my time scrolling down" bullshit diatribes are. All you muz can catch nasty diseases and die for all I care....and I hope it's soon.

    you give more to emotional contents and pressured motivations than to proper thinking and scientific researching in discussing and/or expressing your opinions... for sure there is no such religion called islam held in those characteristics - as have been told by many here - it is a divertion and implementations made by ancient goverments under the name of rule which is recalled caliphate. we still reflect upon things as they reached us from our ancestors to think they are the untouchable truth but indeed what we know are mere facts, yet facts mostly not reflect the truth and this is a scientific fact. i advice all to read within opened mind - not to recite - read entirely both the Bible and the Book of God. see where you can be convienced it is true and where you find decieves. and see how intrusion of humanity along history changed the truth into made-up facts. we keep thinking that what we currently understand is pure christianity and pure islam as so we establish our judgements.

    I don't belong to any religion, several of the posters on this site are atheists. Together, we have a lot of scientific and scholary knowledge. You should know there is really no such thing as scientific fact, there is only theory which if you have the open mind science requires, is always open to question. The truth is a subjective thing at the best of times, especially when it comes to religion, and religious books. Which is why there are many religious sects based both on the Bible and the "Book of God". You say "there is no such religion called islam held in those characteristics". You're entitled to your opinion, but you don't really explain what characteristics you're refering to, or why they're not islam. If you want to be truthful and scientific, you need to be specific with your arguments. I establish my judgements based on what I see and read in the media of the actions of Christians, Jews and Muslims, in light of what I know of human history going back to the beginnings of civilization. Does your knowledge go back that far? If it does, then you should know the Bible is a condensed and edited version of earlier texts, and I'll bet you know a lot about the "Book of God", because I'd take odds that you're a Muslim. If so, you'll never question where your book came from. So Guest, I recommend you take your own advice and read with an open mind, and read other books besides the Bible and the "Book of God". As far as this post is concerned, I recommend you start with Islamic Imperialism, A History by Efraim Karsh, King's College University of London.

    Solkhar, like most Muslims, you seem to be unaware of your own history, because that's what this is about, history. You're so defensive, so anxious to defend your faith, you miss the point. "Therefore, Muslims are stuck in an eternal struggle between Islamists and nationalists." That doesn't hint at the reality, that is the reality. That's why you call Hizb ut-Tahir "wacko" even though you're a Muslim. I take that to mean you're a nationalist. Especially since you often defend Muslim countries as being secular. You DON'T believe in the dream of a Caliphate, do you? If you don't, why are you defending those that do? And you're right, those that do are the radicals, like Hizb ut-Tahir or Al Qeada.

    I am more than aware of history and its implications on the present. I defend the core principles of Islam as defined in the Holy Qur'an and nothing esle, which I believe are the creations of man, be it with good or bad intentions.

    Muslims, like all faiths are defined by the powers of conservatism and reform which in turn is governed at various times by the non-interested, the moderates and the radicals (on both sides of the spectrum). For a multitude of reasons the effects on a faith as a whole is laffected - the industrial revolution had the greatest effect on Christianity that allowed moderate reformers to dominate and correctly the power of Church and State was separated and though you have radical conservatives, the State ensures they remain on the fringe and without much influence on the state. Similarly for a multitude of reasons, that same level of reform did not happen. One major factor is that western dominance ensured that the ongoing reform and the moderates in Islam took second fiddle to the desire for independence and to shrug off colonial power. In some instance, religous repression took place. That is no excuse but historical fact but it only goes so far and since independence, what is the excuses? Nationalism, fractured disunitity for sure, corruption and selfishness is certainly another. The list goes on and on, because as I said, a multitude of factors and generalizing simply does work (hint, hint to everyone here).

    So what you consider a struggle between Islamists and Nationalists is directed a little incorrectly as the conflict or struggle is between conservatism and reform AT THE SAME TIME AS radicalism and moderacy.

    I am not a nationalist and I am certainly not an Islamist, I am a moderate-reformist, as simple as that. I cannot be a nationalist because that implies a particular style of governance which taking a particular side for me seems naive and silly. I certainly do not believe in the dream of a Caliphate, and I should point out that the vast majority of Muslims and all governemnts in this world do not. I do not see how you say I defend those that do, I condemn them, I never defend radicals but you may be confusing the fact that I point out incorrect statements and assumptions when talking about Islam.

    We can chat about this another time as I am away for just under a month, flying out tonight.

    If you're not a nationalist or an Islamist, what "style of governance" is left? As a moderate-reformist, what are you trying to reform? Islam? If it's Islam, are you trying to reform all of Islam? Are you trying to reform how Islam relates to government and politics? Are you advocating seperation of church and state in Muslim countries? It's one thing to want reform, it's another thing to actually bring it about. Do you have or know of any way to bring about reform in Islam? I hope you do, because there is great potential for a lot of bloodshed with the Islamic world the way things are going.

    Well if your going to make crap statements like this one then no wonder the rest fall down. OK, you put this one year ago and I assume you may have learned something since then and now regret making such a statement.

    You have even hinted on the reality, since even you know that only wacko radical groups like Hizb ut-Tahrir claim for such a creation. I assume you also have the base level logic that the schisms, the different countries and even the different radical groups all have their own ideas let alone ideals.

    Simply put, the above "essay" as some idiot referred to, is just as much a stupid dream as tose of the leadership of Hizb ut-Tahrir.

    I will try and put it to you in another way, and I suggest you also look below at my answer to Sir_W.

    The worlwide caliphate is a political "scam" put forward by homeless conservative-radical groups. I say homeless because they have no national loyalties and thus nationalist sentiment. Look at them, the British-based Hizbis infiltrate all of Europe and GB and are constantly at odds with the nations because they cannot see themselves as anything other than their version of Muslims. I cannot even link the word "Islam" with them at all. Al Qaeda is not even a single organisation but the sum-total of linking terrorst organisations and if there is any Al Qaeda ideology - which I do not think there is - it still has to fall under the same no-nation identity and thus are in conflict with anythng that has a state-or nationalist-identity. They are always in, for example, conflict with the Taliban and they do not kill each other because of a common enemy - but they cannot be at peace with them because the Taliban has a strong tribalist-nationalist identity. Thus Al Qaeda goes for the utopian ideal of a Caliphate.

    So no a Caliphate does not exist, it did not from technically the year 661 when people and politics started tearing it up. To make it even more simple, only state-less ultra-radical or violent fringe groups demand it, because they are state-less.

    A word of warning though, if the stupid liberal "niceness" of tolerance in the west continues to these radicals whom have absolutely no loyalty to the countries they are in, you will end up with them becoming revolutionaries attempting to have that Caliphate, even if it only in the west. No chance of it happening, but I see bloodshed if it is not fixed "now".

    The FIRST choice that people will be given when Islam takes over is CONVERT OR BE KILLED! THOSE are your 2 choices!

    Now IF you are a Jew or a Christian (People of the Book), you have a third choice (but ONLY Christians and Jews have this option). You can agree to live as a SECOND CLASS CITIZEN (a 'dhimmi') under Muslim rule. You are to pay an onerous tax (the jizya) for this privilege of being 2nd class with very few rights. The list is too long to give here, but you must always give way to a Muslim. If a Muslim strikes you, you must never strike him back. Your testimony in court is at MOST 1/2 the value of the testimony of a Muslim. You can never be in a position of power over a Muslim. You are to pay your jizya bowed and on your hands and knees to show that you are subjugated and that you feel subjugated. You can never build or rebuild a church or synagogue. If you have a church or synagogue now, it cannot be repaired and it must just be allowed to deteriorate until it falls down. You are not to pray or sing where a Muslim might hear you, because they might have their feelings hurt!! Gays, adulterers and fornicators are to be killed. And it goes ON and ON!

    If you violate ANY of these conditions of being a second class citizen, you are no longer 'protected' and you may then be KILLED!

    HAMZA? Why did you LIE to these good people? Why can't you tell the truth? Could it be that you are practicing taqqiya?!?!?!? Shame on you Hamza!     If for a second you disconnect your brains from CNNBCBSABCBBC, you would realize that that the people who need to worry about this caliphate are the banks which indebt you, the insurance companies which extort you, the governments which over tax you, and the multinationals which extract the resource you live on top of, and charge you an arm and a leg to use. The caliphate will use violence to rid Muslim lands of occupation, it will not be a killing machine. The purpose of the Caliphate is not to kill, it is to implement the laws of Islam. FYI, if you bothered to study rather then sensationalize, you would know that, there are more people executed in the state of Texas alone then the were executed under the caliphate for long periods of time.

    lol sorry you make me laugh! firstly the goal of the islamic state, yes, is to conquer and amke people muslims but then they have a choice. first they will be asked to accept Islam, if not then they will be asked to pay the "jizya," this is a tax which is paid by non- believers, this tax will guarantee thier safety under the caliphate and provide for them. if the second option is also not chosen then the non- believers will be put to the sword by people who "love death as much as how non-believers love this world." The calpihate will provide something much more better than what the governments of today can give by making sure people under its protection even if they are non- muslims have what they want. This means poverty, the worlds no 1 issue in the world will stop because everyone will get a house to live in, and in this recession also everyone under the calpihate will get a job. Thier is no denying that once the caliphate comes into power it will not listen to the butchers of Bosnia, afghanistan,iraq and Palestine. The punishers willbe punished!

    This is the same as Mafia "protection," i.e.: protection from the same people that you pay for "protection." It boils down to "pay me or I will cut off your head, or rape your daughter and then kill her in front of you, or we will burn down you house, or we will confiscate your house, or, or, or, or......"

    Political Islam is no different from Nazism or Communism in this regard, i.e.: the Islamic Government is the master of the individual and his/her so-called God-given rights to property, liberty and life (reverse order of the Declaration of Independence). Political Islam is the enemy of the United States because it is the enemy of the American Declaration of Independence.

    Firstly the Islamic Government tells the non-Muslim that all men are not created equal; the Muslim is politically and culturally superior to the non-Muslim - a violation of our Declaration of Independence.

    Secondly the Islamic Government is a thief; it steals the property of non-Muslims through the tyrannical jizya taxation, and thereby violates the individual’s sacred right to creatively pursue happiness by laboring for his/her property – a violation of our Declaration of Independence.

    Thirdly the Islamic Government is the enemy of the individual’s sacred right to liberty. When the individual speaks out against the violation of his property, or the Islamic Religion, or the Islamic Government, he is silenced; silenced by coercion, imprisonment or further threats to property – a violation of our Declaration of Independence.

    Fourthly, the Islamic Government is the enemy of the individual's sacred right to life because if he/she cannot be silenced any other way, then there is always violence and murder.

    Don’t forget, all of this tyranny is legal under Islamic Government - legalized tyranny. The legalized tyranny of the British Empire is what led to our Declaration of Independence and to war, and we also faced down through war, the legalized tyranny of Nazism and Communism. Now we have a new enemy; a different form of legalized tyranny in religious form.     Did you ever talk to a Armenian survivor of the Turk's califate and their depredations of Armenia? I did. The Turks were very cruel. They did a nasty job on everybody, arabs certainly included. My buddy's grandfather was tortured by the Turks in Syria and, luckily, escaped. The people of Pontus were obliterated and the Kurds have been fighting the Turks, Persians and arabs for 1400 years. I amuses me that so many non-arabs call themselves arab even though the only commonality with arabs is the language they were forced to substitute for their own when the muz came.

    Here in Brazil I talk about the Armenian Genocide every time I could and I'm always eager to spread the word about it, whereas the Turkish Government

    Years ago, I knew a Turk in college and I helped him write a paper for grad school. It was about Hitler and how charismatic he was. One of the points was that Hitler had gotten the idea of genocide of European Jewry from the slaughter of Armenians by the Turks. I was appalled back then, and still am. Most people don't understand the horror....but I sure do. I helped build piles of bodies after battles, in fact, I had to handle bodies a lot because I was a medic. It's something you can never forgetbut sure wish you could. Really, really ugly.

    The crusades started in 1095 CE, with the speech made by Pope Urban II. In that speech, Pope Urban II referred to the Christians as the noble race of the Franks. He encouraged Christians to join the armies to get Jerusalem from the Muslims. Most of the crusaders that left Europe to fight the Muslims were actually aiming to form kingdoms and acquire the wealth found in those lands. That is why the many groups of crusaders were often quarreling amongst themselves over rule of places when they conquered cities.

    The crusaders were against everyone who did not follow their religion and did not look like them. This included Muslims, Jews, and even dark-skinned Christians, all of whom were attacked and murdered by them. They even sacked the city of Constantinople, which was ruled by the Eastern Church (the Byzantine Church).

    The People's Crusade

    The People's Crusade started before the First Crusade. It was to be a total failure. More than fifteen thousand people joined the army lead by Walter the Penniless. Later Peter the Hermit and most of the crusaders took off to Constantinople, from where they planned to go to Jerusalem. However, Peter the Hermit and his advisors had not paid attention to how they were going to feed this huge army. As a result, wherever the crusaders went, they ate up the land like a mass of hungry locusts.     The Crusades were not seen as a big deal at the time. They were seen as another round in the intermittent fighting that had been going on between the Byzantine and Islamic empires for centuries. The fighting often as not pitted Muslim and Christian against Muslim and Christian in struggles for local power. Like most medieval struggles, the warriors fought each other and the peasants and lower classes went on with their lives, with the occaisional plundering, massacre and enslavement of a stronghold thrown in. The Crusades were not about conquest, only the liberation of Jerusalem and the Holy Seplucher. The rule of the Crusaders was so beneficial after the fighting died down, that most Muslims preferred living under their rule than Muslim rule. The practical considerations of daily life exceeded ideological fervor. Saladin ended it all with his desire to establish his own Imperialistic rule, jihad was only a means to that end. His calls for jihad were as often against his own Mulim rivals as it was against Christians. Modern day Islamic extremists have propagandized the Crusades into a rallying cry and justification for jihad, but ignoring historical reality, or rewriting it, to do so.

The Tet offensive in 1968 was the first time I recognized how blatant it was. I had 2 articles from Time Magazine, from the same date, about Tet, but one was from the states and the other from Australia. There were lots of similarities, but some striking differences. Two of his medical books have earned undisputed and unparalleled fame. The first, Kitab al-shifa' (The Book of Healing), was a monumental work that is generally conceded to be the largest ever produced by one person. In it Avicenna developed his theories of medicine and its relevant allied sciences by expounding the doctrines of logic, natural sciences, psychology, geometry, astronomy, arithmetic, music, and metaphysics. For Avicenna, the evaluation of a "disease" was incomplete until and unless all components of a person's life had been included in the diagnosis......

    I haven't read the Talmud, so I can't comment on any cultural supremacy that may be in it. But even if it is true as you say; the Talmud is not part of Christianity. The Torah is part of our religion, but we understand that God apparently acted in mysterious ways in those days. The child-sacrificing cultures which the ancient Jews conquered were not to be admired.

    As far as the Jews being the chosen people; I do not understand that in the political sense - nor did our Founding Fathers. All men (and women) are created equal before God and the law. My understanding is that the Jews were chosen to bring God's moral law into the world: the Ten Commandments; Love your neighbor as yourself; the justice of equity (equality before law), etc. While the ancient Jews (like everyone else) didn't always live up to these standards; the standards themselves are true, and the ancient Jews were chosen for this purpose. Secondly, Christians understand that the Jews were chosen to bring Jesus (God incarnate) into the world. I do not believe Jews to be superior to me before God or the law, but I honor the two great missions for which they were the chosen people. These are my beliefs; some of it based on faith, but some of it makes sense on a purely rational basis.

I was fascinated with Native American culture and their bravery in the face of the white settlers who stole their land. The Native Americans had over 250 treaties broken with them and they were given the worst strips of land that no one wanted. The story of the Native Americans is similar to that of the Palestinians. First Palestinians were living their for thousands of years and suddenly Jews replace them and the natives are forced into refugee camps which they still liveI ask my how the palestinians are different from Native Americans and the only answer I will get "because they want to kill all Jews and drive them into the sea."     2. What are Muslims?
    The Arabic word “Muslim” literally means “someone who is in a state of Islaam (submission to the will and law of Allaah)”. The message of Islaam is meant for the entire world, and anyone who accepts this message becomes a Muslim. Some people mistakenly believe that Islaam is just a religion for Arabs, but nothing could be further from the truth. In actuality, over 80% of the world's Muslims are not Arabs! Even though most Arabs are Muslims, there are Arabs who are Christians, Jews and atheists. If one just takes a look at the various peoples who live in the Muslim World - from Nigeria to Bosnia and from Morocco to Indonesia - it is easy enough to see that Muslims come from all different races, ethnic groups, cultures and nationalities. Islaam has always been a universal message for all people. This can be seen in the fact that some of the early companions of the Prophet Muhammad were not only Arabs, but also Persians, Africans and Byzantine Romans. Being a Muslim entails complete acceptance and active obedience to the revealed teachings and laws of Allaah the Exalted. A Muslim is a person who freely accepts basing his beliefs, values and faith on the will of Almighty God. In the past, even though you do not see it as much today, the word “Mohammedans” was often used as a label for Muslims. This label is a misnomer, and is the result of either willful distortion or sheer ignorance. One of the reasons for the misconception is that Europeans were taught for centuries that Muslims worshipped the Prophet Muhammad in the same way that Christians worship Jesus. This is absolutely not true, since one is not considered a Muslim if he worships anyone or anything besides Allaah the Exalted.
    3. Who is Allaah?
    Often one hears the Arabic word “Allaah” being used in discussions regarding Islaam. The word “Allaah” is simply the Arabic word for Almighty God, and is the same word used by Arabic speaking Christians and Jews. As a matter of fact, the word Allaah was in use far before the word God ever came into existence, since English is a relatively new language. If one were to pick up an Arabic translation of the Bible, one would see the word “Allaah” being use where the word “God” is used in English. For instance, Arabic speaking Christians say that Jesus is, according to their canon belief, the Son of Allaah. In addition, the Arabic word for Almighty God, “Allaah”, is quite similar to the word for God in other Semitic languages. For example, the Hebrew word for God is “Elah”. For various reasons, some non-Muslims mistakenly believe that Muslims worship a different God than the God of Moses and Abraham and Jesus. This is certainly not the case, since the Pure Monotheism of Islaam calls all people to the worship of the God of Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and all the other prophets, peace be upon them.
    4. Who is Muhammad?
    The last and final prophet whom God sent to humanity was the Prophet Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him. At the age of forty, he received the revelation from Allaah. He then spent the remaining portion of his life explaining, and living the teachings of Islaam, the religion that Allaah revealed to him. The Prophet Muhammad, may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him, is the greatest of all prophets for many reasons, but primarily because he was chosen by Allaah to be the last prophet - whose mission to guide humanity would continue until the Last Day - and because he has been sent as a mercy to all of mankind. The result of his mission has brought more people into the pure belief in One God than any other prophet. Since the beginning of time, Allaah sent prophets to the earth, each one to his own specific nation. The Prophet Muhammad, however, was sent as the final Messenger to all of humanity.
    Even though other religious communities have claimed to believe in One God, over time, some corrupted ideas entered into their beliefs and practices leading them away from the pure sincere monotheism of the prophets. Some took their prophets and saints as intercessors with Almighty God. Some even believed that their prophets were the manifestations of God, or “God Incarnate” or the “Son of God”. All of these misconceptions lead to the worship of created beings instead of the Creator, and contributed to the idolatrous practice of believing that Almighty God may be approached through intermediaries. In order to guard against these falsehoods, the Prophet Muhammad, may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him, always emphasized that he was only a human-being with the mission of preaching and obeying Allaah's message. He taught Muslims to refer to him as “the Messenger of God and His Slave”. Through his life and teachings, Allaah made Muhammad, may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him, the perfect example for all people - he was the exemplary prophet, statesman, military leader, ruler, teacher, neighbor, husband, father and friend. Unlike other prophets and messengers, the Prophet Muhammad, may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him, lived in the full light of history, and all his sayings and acts were meticulously recorded and collected. Muslims don't need to have mere ‘faith’ that he existed, or that his teachings are preserved - they know it to be a fact. Allaah took it upon Himself to protect the message revealed to Muhammad from distortion or from being forgotten or lost. This was necessary because Allaah promised that Muhammad, may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him, was to be the final Messenger to mankind. All of Allaah's Messengers preached the message of Islaam - i.e. submission to the law of God and the worship of God alone – but Muhammad, may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him, is the last prophet of Islaam who brought the final and complete message which was never to be changed until the Last Day.
    5. What are the Teachings of Islaam?
    The foundation of the Islaamic faith is belief in absolute Monotheism (the Oneness of God). This means to believe that there is only one Creator and Sustainer of everything in the Universe, and that nothing is divine or worthy of being worshipped except for Him. Truly, believing in the Oneness of God means much more than simply believing that there is “One God” - as opposed to two, three or four. There are a number of religions that claim belief in “One God” and believe that ultimately there is only one Creator and Sustainer of the Universe, but true monotheism is to believe that only the One True Deity is to be worshipped in accordance to the revelation He sent to His Messenger. Islaam also rejects the use of all intermediaries between God and Man, and insists that people approach God directly and reserve all worship for Him alone. Muslims believe that Almighty God is Compassionate, Loving and Merciful.
    A common misconception is the claim that God cannot forgive His creatures directly. By over-emphasizing the burden and penalty of sin, as well as claiming that God cannot forgive humans directly, people often despair of the Mercy of God. Once they become convinced that they cannot approach God directly, they turn to false gods for help, such as heroes, political leaders, saviors, saints, and angels. We often find that the people who worship, pray to, or seek intercession from these false deities, do not consider them to be a ‘god’. They claim belief in One Supreme God, but claim that they pray to and worship others beside God only to get closer to Him. In Islaam, there is a clear distinction between the Creator and the created. There is no ambiguity or mystery in issues of divinity: anything that is created does not deserve to be worshipped; only Allaah, the Creator, is worthy of being worshipped. Some religions falsely believe that God has become part of His creation, and this has led people to believe that they can worship something created in order to reach their Creator.
    Muslims believe that even though God is Unique and Exalted beyond speculative comprehension, He definitely has no partners, associates, peers, antagonists or offspring. According to Muslim belief, Allaah “neither begets, nor was He begotten” - neither literally, allegorically, metaphorically, physically or metaphysically. He is Absolutely Unique and Eternal. He is in control of everything and is perfectly capable of bestowing His infinite Mercy and Forgiveness to whomever He chooses. That is why Allaah is also called the All-Powerful and Most-Merciful. Allaah has created the Universe for man, and as such wants the best for all human beings. Muslims see everything in the Universe as a sign of the Creatorship and Benevolence of Almighty God. Also, the belief in the Oneness of Allaah is not merely a metaphysical concept. It is a dynamic belief that affects ones view of humanity, society and all aspects of practical life. As a logical corollary to the Islaamic belief in the Oneness of Allaah, is its belief in the oneness of mankind and humanity.
    6. What is the Qur'aan?
    The Qur'aan is the final revelation of Allaah to all of mankind, which was spoken by Allaah the Exalted Himself and conveyed through the Arch-Angel Gabriel in Arabic to the Prophet Muhammad, in sound, word and meaning. The Qur'aan, (sometimes incorrectly spelled Koran), was then relayed to the Prophet's companions, and they diligently memorized it verbatim and meticulously complied it into written form. The Holy Qur'aan has been continually recited by the companions of the Prophet and their successors until the present day. In short, the Qur'aan is the revealed book of Divine scripture from Allaah to all humanity for their guidance and salvation.
    Today the Qur'aan is still memorized and taught by millions of people. The language of the Qur'aan, Arabic, is still a living language to millions of people. Unlike the scriptures of some other religions, the Qur'aan is still read in its original language by countless millions of people. The Qur'aan is a living miracle in the Arabic language, and it is known to be inimitable in its style, form and spiritual impact, as well as the unique knowledge that it contains. The Qur'aan was revealed in a series of revelations to the Prophet Muhammad over a period of 23 years. In contrast to many other religious books, the Qur'aan was always believed to be the exact Word of Allaah. The Qur'aan was recited publicly in front of both the Muslim and non-Muslim communities during the life of the Prophet Muhammad, and thereafter. The entire Qur'aan was also completely written down in the lifetime of the Prophet, and numerous companions of the Prophet memorized the entire Qur'aan word-for-word as it was revealed. The Qur'aan was always in the hands of the common believers: it was always thought to be God's word; and, due to wide-spread memorization, it was perfectly preserved. Never was any part of it altered or decreed by any religious council. The teachings of the Qur'aan comprise a universal scripture addressed to all of mankind and not to any particular tribe or ‘chosen people’. The message that it brings is nothing new but the same message of all of the prophets: 'submit to Allaah the One God and worship Him alone and follow Allaah's Messengers for success in this life and salvation in the hereafter'. As such, Allaah's revelation in the Qur'aan focuses on teaching human beings the importance of believing in the Oneness of Allaah, and framing their lives around the guidance which He has sent, which is articulated in the Islamic Law. The Qur'aan contains the stories of the previous prophets, such as Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus, peace be upon all of them, as well as commands and prohibitions from God. In our modern times, in which so many people are caught up in doubt, spiritual despair and social and political alienation, the Qur'aanic teachings offer solutions to the emptiness of our lives and the turmoil that is gripping the world today.
    7. How Do Muslims View the Nature of Man, the Purpose of Life and the Life Hereafter?
    In the Holy Qur'aan, Allaah teaches human beings that they were created in order to glorify and worship Him, and that the basis of all true worship is God-consciousness. All of Allaah's creatures worship him naturally and only the humans have the free will to worship Allaah their Creator or to reject Him. This is a great test, but also a great honor. Since the teachings of Islaam encompass all aspects of life and ethics, God-consciousness is encouraged in all human affairs. Islaam makes it clear that all human acts are acts of worship if they are done for God alone and in accordance to His Divine Scripture and Law. As such, worship in Islaam is not limited to religious rituals, and for this reason it is more properly known as ‘way of life’ than a religion. The teachings of Islaam act as a mercy and a healing for the human soul, and qualities such as humility, sincerity, patience and charity are strongly encouraged. Additionally, Islaam condemns pride and self-righteousness, since Almighty God is the only judge of human righteousness.
    The Islaamic view of the nature of man is also realistic and well-balanced in that human beings are not believed to be inherently sinful, but are seen as equally capable of both good and evil; it is their choice. Islaam teaches that faith and action go hand-in-hand. God has given people free-will, and the measure of one's faith is their deeds and actions. However, since human beings have also been created innately weak and regularly fall into sin, they are in need of continually seeking guidance and repentance, which is, in itself , also a form of worship loved by Allaah. The nature of the human being as created by God in His Majesty and Wisdom, is not inherently ‘corrupt’ or in need of repair. The avenue of repentance is always open to all. Almighty God knew that humans were going to make mistakes, so the real test is whether they seek repentance for their sins and try to avoid them, or if they prefer a life of heedlessness and sin, knowing well that it is not pleasing to God. The true balance of an Islaamic life is established by having a healthy fear of Allaah's rightful punishment for crimes and sins, as well as a sincere belief that Allaah, in His infinite Mercy, takes pleasure in bestowing His reward for our good deeds and sincere worship to Him. A life without fear of Allaah leads to sin and disobedience, while believing that we have sinned so much that God will not possibly forgive us only leads to despair. In the light of this fact, Islaam teaches that only the misguided despair of the Mercy of their Lord, and only wicked criminals are devoid of the fear of Allaah their Creator and Judge. The Holy Qur'aan as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, also contains a great deal of teachings about life in the hereafter and the Day of Judgment. Muslims believe that all human beings will ultimately be judged by Allaah, the Absolute Sovereign King and Judge, for their beliefs and actions in their earthly lives. In judging human beings, Allaah the Exalted will be both Absolutely Just, by only punishing the truly guilty and rebellious unrepentant criminals, and Absolutely Merciful for those people who He, in His wisdom, judges worthy of mercy. None will be judged for that which was beyond their capacity, or for that which they did not actually do. It is sufficient to say that Islaam teaches that life is a test designed by Allaah, the Creator, Almighty and Most Wise; and that all human beings will be accountable before Allaah for what they did with their lives. A sincere belief in the life of the hereafter is the key to leading a well-balanced and moral life. Otherwise, life is viewed as an end in itself, which causes people to become more selfish, materialistic and immoral by their blind pursuit of pleasure even at the expense of reason and ethics.

  • I also want to add that you at least consider much of what people on here are saying. Be thoughtful of the facts they present before you react too quickly. Try to research it before forming your response. I even do that with points I agree with sometimes! Many on here are very learned. For many of them, their dislike (or outright hatred) of Islam is based on their personal experiences (first hand) and/or all the violence of Islam that is at the forefront of the news we all see. I have some favorites, but I will still do some google searches to see if there are any other news sources that can verify the stories. It takes alot of "footwork", but if you want a balanced opinion you have to work at it.
    As for history, same thing. Pick a historical event to study & then use multiple sources to read about it. You can do all this on the internet (amazing invention!) but it might be trickier if you live in a country that censors search engines (ie; China!)

    Allaah Says (what means): "By the grace of Allaah, you are gentle towards the people; if you had been stern and ill-tempered, they would have dispersed from round about you" [Quran, 3: 159]

    About himself the prophet said: "Allaah has sent me as an apostle so that I may demonstrate perfection of character, refinement of manners and loftiness of deportment." [Maalik and Ahmad]

    By nature he was gentle and kind hearted, always inclined to be gracious and to overlook the faults of others. Politeness and courtesy, compassion and tenderness, simplicity and humility, sympathy and sincerity were some of the keynotes of his character. In the cause of right and justice he could be resolute and severe but more often than not, his severity was tempered with generosity. He had charming manners which won him the affection of his followers and secured their devotion. Though virtual king of Arabia and an apostle of Allaah, he never assumed an air of superiority. Not that he had to conceal any such vein by practice and artifice: with fear of Allaah, sincere humility was ingrained in his heart. He used to say: "I am a Prophet of Allaah but I do not know what will be my end." [Al-Bukhaari]

    In one of his sermons calculated to instill the fear of Allaah and the day of reckoning in the hearts of men, he said: "O people of Quraysh be prepared for the hereafter, I cannot save you from the punishment of Allaah; O Bani Abd Manaaf, I cannot save you from Allaah; O Abbaas, son of Abdul-Mutalib, I cannot protect you either; O Faatimah, daughter of Muhammad, even you I cannot save." [Al-Bukhaari & Muslim]

    He used to pray: "O Allaah! I am but a man. If I hurt any one in any manner, then forgive me and do not punish me." [Ahmad]

    He always received people with courtesy and showed respect to older people and stated:

    "To honor an old man is to show glorification to Allaah."

    He would not deny courtesy even to wicked persons. It is stated that a person came to his house and asked permission for admission. The prophet remarked that he was not a good person but might be admitted. When he came in and while he remained in the house, he was shown full courtesy. When he left 'Aa'ishah said: "You did not think well of this man, but you treated him so well."

    The prophet replied: "He is a bad person in the sight of Allaah who does not behave courteously and people shun his company because of his bad manners." [Al-Bukhaari]

    He was always the first to greet another and would not withdraw his hand from a handshake till the other man withdrew his. If one wanted to say something in his ears, he would not turn away till one had finished as reported in the books of Abu Daawood and At-Tirmithi . He did not like people to get up for him and used to say: "Let him, who likes people to stand up in his honor, he should seek a place in hell." [Abu Daawood].

    He would himself, however, stand up when any dignitary came to him. He had stood up to receive the wet nurse who had reared him in infancy and had spread his own sheet for her. His foster brother was given similar treatment. He avoided sitting at a prominent place in a gathering, so much so that people coming in had difficulty in spotting him and had to ask which one was the Prophet . Quite frequently uncouth bedouins accosted him in their own gruff and impolite manner but he never took offence. [Abu Daawood]

    He used to visit the poorest of ailing persons and exhorted all Muslims to do likewise [Al-Bukhaari]. He would sit with the humblest of persons saying that righteousness alone was the criterion of one's superiority over another. He invariably invited people be they slaves, servants or the poorest believers, to partake with him of his scanty meals. [At-Tirmithi]

    Whenever he visited a person he would first greet him and then take his permission to enter the house. He advised the people to follow this etiquette and not to get annoyed if anyone declined to give permission, for it was quite likely the person concerned was busy otherwise and did not mean any disrespect.

    There was no type of household work too low or too undignified for him . 'Aa'ishah has stated: "He always joined in household work and would at times mend his clothes, repair his shoes and sweep the floor. He would milk, tether, and feed his animals and do the household shopping." [Al-Bukhaari]

    He would not hesitate to do the menial work of others, particularly of orphans and widows [An-Nasaa'ee, Ad-Daarami]. Once when there was no male member in the house of the companion Khabaab Ibn Al-Arat who had gone to the battlefield, he used to go to his house daily and milk his cattle for the inhabitants [Ibn Saad].

    Birth, Childhood and Prophethood
    The Prophet () was born in the year 571 C.E. into the tribe of Quraish, deemed the noblest by all the Arabs, in Makkah, which was the religious and commercial capital of the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabs would perform pilgrimage to Makkah and circumambulate the Ka’bah, the structure built by their ancestor the Prophet Abraham and his son, the Prophet Ishmael, may God praise them both, as the first house of worship for God.
    The Prophet () was an orphan since his father passed away before he was born and his mother died when he was six years old. He was taken under the care of his grandfather, Abdul‐Muttalib, and when he died, his uncle, Abu Talib, took charge of him. His tribe as well as the other Arab worshipped idols made from stone, wood and even gold, and some of these idols were placed around the Ka’bah. People believed that the idols could ward off harm or bring benefit.
    Even before he was chosen by God as a prophet Muhammad () was known as the most trustworthy and honest person, and because he never behaved treacherously, or cheated he was known among his people as ‘Al‐Ameen’, ‘The Trustworthy’. People would entrust him with their valuables when they wanted to travel. He was also known as ‘As‐Sadiq’ or ‘The Truthful’ for he never told a lie. He was well mannered, well‐spoken, and loved to assist people in need. His people loved and

    revered him for his many beautiful traits and good manners. God, the Exalted, says:
    Indeed you are of a great moral character. [68:4]
    The famous Scottish historian and writer, Thomas Carlyle (d. 1885) wrote in his book: ‘Heroes, Hero‐Worship and the Heroic in History’:
    But, from an early age, he had been remarked as a thoughtful man. His companions named him ʺAl Amin, The Faithful.ʺ A man of truth and fidelity; true in what he did, in what he spoke and thought. They noted that he always meant something. A man rather taciturn in speech; silent when there was nothing to be said; but pertinent, wise, sincere, when he did speak; always throwing light on the matter. This is the only sort of speech worth speaking! Through life we find him to have been regarded as an altogether solid, brotherly, genuine man. A serious, sincere character; yet amiable, cordial, companionable, jocose even ‐ a good laugh in him withal: there are men whose laugh is as untrue as anything about them; who cannot laugh. A spontaneous, passionate, yet just, true‐meaning man! Full of wild faculty, fire and light; of wild worth, all uncultured; working out his life ‐ takes in the depth of the Desert there.
    He () never partook in any falsehood; drank intoxicants, bowed to a statue or idol or took an oath by them or sacrificed to them any offering. For some time he was a shepherd over a flock of sheep belonging to his people. The Prophet () said:

    ‘Every prophet commissioned by God was a shepherd over a flock of sheep.’ His companions asked him: ‘Even you, O Messenger of God?’ He said: ‘Yes, I would take care of a flock of sheep for the people of Makkah.’ (Bukhari 2143) 1
    The Prophet () liked to seclude himself in the Cave of Hira before he was commissioned as a prophet, spending many nights at a time.
    At the age of forty, the Prophet () received divine revelation while at that cave, as A’ishah, may God be pleased with her,2 explains:
    The first thing that God’s Messenger () received while in the Cave of Hira in Makkah were good visions (as revelations in dreams). Every time he had a dream it would come true and as clear as the split of the dawn. Later on God’s Messenger () began to love being alone in meditation. He spent lengthy periods for days and nights to fulfill this purpose in the cave before returning back to his family. He would take a supply of food for his trip. When he came back to his wife Khadeejah, may God be pleased with her,3 he would get a fresh supply of food and go back to the same cave to continue his meditation.
    1 The wisdom of this is mentioned as preparation for dealings with people by first learning to deal with animals, and herding goats and sheep makes one more loving and tender hearted that the coarseness developed from cattle, horse and camel raising and herding.
    2 A wife of the Prophet ().
    3 Khadeejah was the first wife of the Prophet.

    While he was in the Cave of Hira the Angel Gabriel came to Muhammad () and commanded him to read. Muhammad () replied, ”I cannot read!“ Gabriel embraced Muhammad () until he could not breathe, and then let him go saying, ”O Muhammad! Read!“ Again, Muhammad () replied, ”I cannot read!“ Gabriel embraced Muhammad () for the second time. He then ordered him to read for the third time, when he did not he embraced him tightly until he could not breathe, and then released him saying, ”O Muhammad!
    Recite with the Name of Your Lord Who has created (all that exists). He has created man out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood: Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous.(96:1‐3)
    The Messenger of God () returned home trembling in fear. He entered his home and told Khadeejah: “Cover me, cover me!“ Khadeejah covered Muhammad () until he felt better. He then informed her about what happened to him in the Cave of Hira. He said, ”I was concerned about myself and my well‐being.“ Khadeejah assured Muhammad () saying:
    By God! You don’t have to worry for God the Exalted will never humiliate you! You are good to your kith and kin. You help the poor and needy. You are generous and hospitable to your guests. You help people who are in need.
    Khadeejah took her husband Muhammad () to a cousin of hers named Waraqah ibn Nawfal ibn Asad ibn Abdul Uzza, who had become a Christian during the pre‐Islamic

    times (known as the Era of Ignorance). He was a scribe of the Scriptures in Hebrew but by that time in latter life had become blind. Khadeejah said to her cousin,
    ʺO cousin, listen to what your nephew [i.e. Muhammad ] is about to tell you!“ Waraqah said: ʺWhat is it you have seen, dear nephew?“
    The Messenger of God () informed him of what he had seen in the Cave of Hira. Upon hearing his report, Waraqah said,
    ”By God! This is the Angel Gabriel who came to Prophet Moses, may God praise him. I wish I would be alive when your people will drive you out of Makkah!“ The Messenger of God () wondered: ”Are they going to drive me out of Makkah?!” Waraqah affirmed positively saying, ”Never has a man conveyed a Message similar to what you have been charged with, except that his people waged war against him ‐ if I am to witness this, I will support you.”
    Waraqah lived only a short period after this incident and passed away. Revelation also stopped for a while.’ (Bukhari #3)
    The chapter of the Qur’an quoted in the hadeeth1 above marks the beginning when he was commissioned as a Prophet. God, the Exalted, then revealed to him:
    1 Hadeeth are the narrations of a statement, deed, tacit approval, or characteristic of the Prophet (). The sciences of Hadeeth developed to historically verify the authenticity of some narrations related by an

    With the revelation of this chapter of the Qur’an the Prophet () began calling the Makkans to Islam openly. He began with his own relatives and tribe, but most of them refused adamantly to listen to himsince he was calling them to a matter which they had never witnessed before and was contradictory to the idolatry that was common among them for generations
    Islam is a complete way of life that deals with all religious, political, economical and social affairs. Not only does Islam call them to worship God alone and to forsake all idol worship but it also prohibited them from things they considered pleasurable, such as intoxicants, fornication, gambling, and consuming interest from debt. He called the people to be just and fair with one another, and to know that there was no difference between them except through piety. How could the Quraish, the noblest tribe amongst the Arabs, stand to be treated equally with those of less status and the slaves! Not only did they adamantly refuse to accept Islam but they persecuted him and called him crazy, a sorcerer and a liar to discredit him. They accused him of crimes they couldn’t have dared to before the advent of Islam. They incited the ignorant masses against him to harm him and to oppress and torture his
    unbroken chain of trustworthy narrators one upon another back to the Prophet himself as apposed to the unreliable narrations or fabricated lies.

    Let it also be said that Yahweh does not mean “God the Creator”. It strictly means “I am”, “The Lord”, “The one in charge”.
    Eloah, Elah and Allah in are special words to describe the monotheistic - one God – in the Semitic languages of classic Hebrew (Moses), Aramaic (Jesus) and Arabic (Muhammad). They consist of the defining letters of L.A.H. and are unique since they can neither take the form of male, female nor can they be expressed in plurality. This is not the case with most definitions of God, which can also form as “gods”, “goddess”, “goddesses” and have been used in many other irrelevant contexts.
    The conformity between how Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (pbut) referred to the one unseen “God” – the creator of heavens and earth – shows that these prophets were refereeing to the same God – The one supreme creator of the universe – and carried the same prophetic task.
    Although Arabic is the only true living language of the three, it is an accepted fact that “My God” is pronounced exactly the same in all these three languages as “Elahi”.
    Elahi is pronounced “eelaahee”. It consists of “Elah” meaning God and “i” – pronounced “ee” – meaning “My” or “Mine”
    To justify the above argument, it is interesting that the Arabic bible uses the word Allah to refer to God. One can find the word Allah repeated eleven times on the first page of an Arabic Bible alone.
    Convincingly, that is why He – God the creator – tells us in the Quran “I am your creator. I am Allah, other than me there’s no other god” and Gabriel passes this to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) that “to Him belongs all the beautiful names.
    Say: “Call upon Allah (God), or call upon Most Gracious: by whatever name ye call upon Him, (it is well): for to Him belong the Most Beautiful Names. Neither speak thy Prayer aloud, nor speak it in a low tone, but seek a middle course between.” (Quran 17:110)
    Allah (God). there is no god but He! To Him belong the most Beautiful Names. (Quran 20:8)
    Allah is He, than Whom there is no other god;- the Sovereign, the Holy One, the Source of Peace (and Perfection), the Guardian of Faith, the Preserver of Safety, the Exalted in Might, the Irresistible, the Supreme: Glory to Allah. (High is He) above the partners they attribute to Him.
    He is Allah, the Creator, the Evolver, the Bestower of Forms (and Colours). To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names: whatever is in the heavens and on earth, doth declare His Praises and Glory: and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (Quran 59:23-24)

    The only absolute being is God and He is absolutely different from anything our human perception allows us to form or imagine of Him. The Quran implies that the only avenue to understanding Him is to understand his beautiful attributes and names.
    Jeffery Land, an American mathematics professor at the University of Southern California, a former atheist and a convert to Islam, in his book “Losing My Religion”, writes:
    “It is not true that the Quran tells us very little about God; it tells us a great deal, but for some reason I had paid no attention to it. If I had just glanced at the beginning of a surah (i.e. chapter of Quran) or turned to almost any page, I would have found what I was looking for, if only I had read carefully, for there are thousands of descriptions of God in the Quran that link good works to growing closer to Him. Although I had read the Quran from cover to cover, deliberating on and analyzing almost every verse along the way, I mentally disregarded the Scripture’s abundant references to God’s attributes.
    The Quran teaches us God’s most beautiful names.
    It teaches mankind that God is most compassionate, most merciful, most powerful beyond bounds, He is all-knowing, all-wise, ever-lasting, exalted in might, the knower of all things both secret and open, the sovereign, the Holy One, the guardian of faith, He is the preserver of safety, the Irresistible, the sources of peace and perfection; He is Allah (God), than whom there is no other god, He is the beneficent, the supreme, He begets non nor is He begotten, He is above all the things some associate with Him.
    French Doctor, Maurice Bucaille in his book, The Bible, The Quran and Science writes:

Al lâh means ‘the Divinity’ in Arabic: it is a single God, implying that a correct transcription can only render the exact meaning of the word with the help of the expression ‘God’. For the Muslim, al lâh is none other than the God of Moses and Jesus.
    The document produced by the Office for Non-Christian Affairs at the Vatican stresses this fundamental point in the following terms:
    “It would seem pointless to maintain that Allâh is not really God, as do certain people in the West! The conciliar documents have put the above assertion in its proper place. There is no better way of illustrating Islamic faith in God than by quoting the following extracts from Lumen Gentium [ Lumen Gentium is the title of a document produced by the Second Vatican Council (1962-1966)].

In a free society, you have the opportunity to earn as much money as you're capable of to obtain the best home you can regardless of your religion. Muslim countries are among the poorest countries in the world, unless they happen to be sitting on oceans of oil, which they have to have extractred from the ground by western companies because they don't have the expertise.
