EMIRATES: WOMEN CHARGED WITH INDECENT BEHAVIOR ON BEACH

While I do not agree that one’s sexual preference is something one is born with, I do not believe it is up to any government to tell people how to live their lives.

(ANSAmed) – DUBAI, MAY 21 – In the first lawsuit of its kind in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), two women were brought to court on charges of indecent behaviour at a public place, Gulf News daily reported explaining that a 30-year-old Lebanese visitor and a 36-year-old Bulgarian employee were spotted being intimate together on a public beach between Sharjah and Dubai. According to the prosecution’s witnesses, the two foreigners were seen kissing, cuddling and “sleeping on each other making indecent gestures”. The two women pleaded not guilty and the hearing was postponed. Although often recalling to the foreigners the need to respect the local traditions and religious values, the UAE generally are very flexible and tolerant with the behaviour of the foreigners at least until they cross the line of legality. In muslim countries, they aren’t so keen on the freedoms we enjoy in the West. Even if I do disagree with some of those freedoms (abortion being my main beef).

The problem is that if a woman is single and over a certain age, she becomes 'public property'. I am not certain how this is defined, but I doubt it is much of a choice.
