Nigerian muslim counsels against taking 86 wives

Sound wisdom, if you ask me. I know people who counsel me against even taking ONE wife, let alone 86…

Nigerian Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, has advised other men not to follow his example and marry 86 women.

The former teacher and Muslim preacher, who lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children, says he is able to cope only with the help of God.
“A man with 10 wives would collapse and die, but my own power is given by Allah. That is why I have been able to control 86 of them,” he told the BBC.
He says his wives have sought him out because of his reputation as a healer.
“I don’t go looking for them, they come to me. I will consider the fact that God has asked me to do it and I will just marry them.”
But such claims have alienated the Islamic authorities in Nigeria, who have branded his family a cult.

Most Muslim scholars agree that a man is allowed to have four wives, as long as he can treat them equally.
But Mr Bello Abubakar says there is no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than four wives.
“To my understanding the Koran does not place a limit and it is up to what your own power, your own endowment and ability allows,” he says.
“God did not say what the punishment should be for a man who has more than four wives, but he was specific about the punishment for fornication and adultery.”

Wow, even his so called ‘tolerant’ muslim authorities have ostracized him.

    there is always a justification of a bias. truly bias and love are 2 emotions that find amazing justification. the views on this site are so amazingly one sided and so many metaphors are taken in the literal order just to prove that the quran is a book which gives man the status of dominating the woman. it this was not so sad it would actually be hilarious and one can only feel empathatic for people with such radical views who in turn talk of the quran as radical!! amazing really

    Jes, The 1st amendment of MY Constitution says that everyone is entitled to have an opinion and is entitled to voice it.  My opinion is that islam is a useless farce, the worst instrument of repression the world has ever seen and it's "prophet" was a sexually deviant charlatan who was a butcher of innocents.  Stick that in yer pipe and smoke it.

  • You got that right Always on Watch - wouldn't even want 2 husbands, unless  second one would be rich as sin, one foot in grave and we never lived together.  Those Muslims are perverted sick minded disgusting people, and surly the kiss of death.   They must be miserable as Hades and look worse in those rags they wear.  What's the point of that get up?  Dumb and Dumber!
  • As a woman, I don't know about 86 wives.  But I surely don't want 86 husbands -- for a variety of reasons.
