SHOCKER! New constitution in muslim Maldives does NOT guarantee basic human rights

Washington — The Institute on Religion and Public Policy strongly condemns the new constitution ratified by the Maldives’ legislature yesterday. The constitution fails to provide basic guarantees of rights and freedoms in the country for non-Muslims and also violates internationally accepted human rights standards and norms.

Article 9, Section D states that “a non-Muslim may not become a citizen of the Maldives.” By denying citizenship to some people on the basis of their religion, the country is violating religious minorities’ freedom of worship.

“This denial of citizenship to non-Muslims is an extraordinarily harsh measure which places the Maldives among the worst countries in the world in regards to the legal foundation for freedom of religion and belief,” said Institute President Joseph K. Grieboski.

In addition to denying non-Muslims citizenship, the new constitution establishes several other precepts which threaten the freedom of religion. The new constitution favors Sunni Islam over other forms of Islam, establishes certain aspects of Sharia law in the Maldives and limits the freedom of expression and thought to “manners” which are “not contrary to a tenet of Islam.”

The Institute’s Expert Committee on Legislation and Implementation is currently crafting a comprehensive analysis of the new constitution for expected release in September.

      Welcome back, herr Marcus. islam is NOTHING like Christianity 500 years ago. The Inquisition? A response to muslim invasion of Europe. The Crusades of 1000 years ago? An attempt at retaking Christian lands that muslims invaded and overran. It helps if you stay awake in that history class you recommend Philip attend.

      Uh, Kal 500 years ago it wasnt Arabs/Muslims who were invading Europe.

      500 years ago it was European Christians invading and conquering the Americas and the whole world.

      Also 500 years ago you had Protestant and Catholics burning each other to death, kind of like Shias and Sunni’s blowing each other today. I mean the Iran-Iraq war lasted only 8 years. Compare that with the 100 Years War fought by Christians against Christians.

      Doesnt all this bickering sound just like two partie conflicks we already know about,Sharia vs Shites,rebublicans vs democrates, christians vs the jews. Human nature is just still following its course,Your chosen Political Party/spiritual beliefs,Is really up to YOU.Conditions of enviorment,family traditions, and History of the time usually.determined your decision.Now though people can usually make up there own mind,unfortunatley these times with Muslims trying to convert infidels,Christians accepting new concepts of religion and science,endless genere’s with in the internet,Spiritual anarchy.Like I mentioned before confusing times,By the way the once (almost true religion was Shamanism,God is in shaminism ,The fear of a higher power,life after death,and Harmony with nature and the universal laws.Large groups of people with thier numbers dominate and distort the truth seekers.Ex:muslims,nazis.and even P.E.T.A. One very good advantage in the infidel world is that I have unconditional choices of which spiritual path I might believe to follow,So to all ( may God,Allah,and the shaministic spirits bless you all,becausse you still might have a chance to be reincarnated as an endangered species,If any sane person converts to islam though let him be reincarnated as a piece of camel feces.Your ,liberal,freedom supporting,god loving and fearing believing ,terrorist hating,infidel.       hey guys. im from Maldives. MALDIVES IS AN 100% islamic country of just 300,000 people . y should we allow anyone from another religion to be in our country and create disorder among a united country?? we the citizens of maldives don’t want any other religion. we are proud of our unique identity. and btw that part of the constitution is not opposed by a single maldivian for sure.
