Canada: Turkish embassy whines about school course on Armenian Genocide

I remember a while back the Turks got a bunch of sand in their vaginas over Congress passing a resolution acknowledging the Ottoman slaughter of the Armenians back in the early part of the last century. Now they are bitching about this.

The killings of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915 is being taught alongside the Holocaust and the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

By Michelle Collins

In a letter to Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and the province’s Ministry of Education, the Turkish Embassy has voiced strong objections to a Toronto District School Board decision to teach students that the killing of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915 was genocide.

The lessons will come in a new course entitled “Genocide: Historical and Contemporary Implications” that will be launched with the start of the new school year in September. The course’s three case studies include the Ottoman’s killing of Armenians in 1915, the Holocaust and the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Although the Canadian Parliament approved a motion in 2004 recognizing the killings as genocide, the Turkish government has long disputed the description.

The idea of teaching a course on genocide was first raised three years ago by a Toronto board trustee, but has since been met with controversy on all sides. Aside from Turkish objections, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress advocated that the Holodomor should be included in the course, and the Muslim Canadian Congress accused the board of religious bias.

As the controversy escalated over what was and wasn’t included in course material, the school board decided earlier this year to strike a review committee. After a few public meetings, the panel concluded that the course reading list would need to be approved by a panel of historical experts.

Apparently Turkey can’t face up to the ugly truth, much like their muslim counter parts who constantly deny islam is violent, then react violently whenever a kuffar says ‘islam is violent’. Now I sympaythize with parents who fear for their kids, but I recall after 9/11 lots of muslims and terrorist appeasers crying out that we needed to be wary of a backlash against muslims. SURPRISE! (Not really) there was none. There were a few nutjobs who went off the deep end, but it is NOTHING compared to what is done to minorities in muslim countries.

OK, I think I ranted long enough,

History is important to every people as this can broaden one’s
knowledge and perception about certain things. People have the right to know
what had happened in the past therefore it is just justifiable to learn the past
history and learn something from it. If the Turkish embassy is pissed about
this, then why are the two World Wars and other wars in the history always
being studied and taught in almost all schools in the globe?

Aside from not knowing who writes the history books, and what personal beliefs and prejudices they have. You have national interests, like these Turks, that are more concerned with their countries image and reputation, than the truth. When the special interest of the Turks, or others like them, are allowed to influence what we learn about history, then history has a much better chance of repeating itself, usually, tragically.
