Russian woman put on trial in Dubai for drinking juice in public

Do you like this story?

A tourist usually doesn’t know any better, and can forget local customs while busy moving about in Dubai. I know, as I have been there many times myself. You would think the police there would see she was there on a tourist visa and could easily have just given her a verbal warning.

A 28-year-old Russian female, who visited Dubai on a tourist visa, and a 30-year-old male citizen of Lebanon, a salesman in a local store, were put on trial for drinking juice in a public place in the daytime during Muslim fasting.

The police caught the two people red-handed at a gas station in Dubai, Emirat.ru reports with reference to Gulf News.

In accordance with the Federal Penal Code of the United Arab Emirates, a public intake of food and beverages during daytime hours of the month of Ramadan is forbidden by Article 313. The article stipulates the punishment in the form of either a monetary penalty – up to 2,000 dirhems ($555) – or even a term of up to one month in prison.

The young people told the court that they were not Muslims and were thus unaware of the fact that their actions could be punishable.

The court took the mitigating circumstances into consideration, but found the defendants guilty, since ignorance did not exclude responsibility. The court ruled that the young people must pay the fine of 1,000 dirhems ($278) each.

The case became the first one in Dubai in violation of Article 313 since the beginning of the month of Ramadan on September 1.

Thousands of foreigners from Europe and Asia reside in the emirate of Dubai, the major tourist center of the Persian Gulf . Dubai is known as a relatively liberal region in comparison with other territories of the UAE. Tourists can be seen in the streets wearing shorts, whereas alcoholic beverages can often be available in bars and hotels.

This year, however, the authorities intend to remind all residents and guests of the emirate that they are staying on the territory of a Muslim country. There have been quite a number of incidents recently when the local police in plain clothes arrested women sunbathing topless, nudists and other violators of public order.

Many tourists acknowledge that that they do not always understand how they should behave in Dubai.

Guide-books advise tourists should always carry their IDs, or better their copies, with them for the majority of police officers wear plain clothes and can be rather meticulous in their inspections.

Gotta love the double standard, in the UK they ask that kuffar not drink in front of muslims in town council meets. But let an infidel get caught drinking juice in Dar al-islam…

why do people even visit these countries?  is it to feel like you traveled back in time a 1000 years?

  • jennyjen

Boy Dubai sure is a progressive little corner of the world..they even sell alcohol in hotels, I’m shocked and bewildered! I’m with Ender on this one, why would you even go there??  Go to the Caribbean- the people there are happy to see tourists and will get you whatever you need! You can’t offend anyone because nobody cares mon, you on island time!

Dubai, sounds good to me.  Lets get a trip up, I’ve always wanted to go.  Dubai, number one pick.  Any time, any place!

  • Liz

My husband should be landing in Dubai as I write this, on his way to Afghanistan to work for KBR. I think anyone who builds an island that looks like a palm tree, for really expensive homes…and builds it quite near to a major earthquake faultline, has more screws loose than we could count. Remember San Francisco and liquifaction. They have too much money and no sense.
    I’ll vote for the Caribbean anytime…it’s 5 o’clock there.

Liz: How long will your husband be there?  Is it warm year round?
By the way, when we pray things start popping.  Goodness this election is wild, Dick Morris said McCain has all them trapped and the Dem Wits will have to pass what he proposes, not the 700 Million.  Morris said McCain has the upper hand, and did a brilliant move.  It’s above my head, we are just praying for confusion and it’s working.
Just remember this was your idea, Ha Ha.  Of course I agreed.  God is confounding the enemy alright, do we dare tell McCain what we did? LOL  This is very interesting to watch, one guy said he had never been as emotional over an election in his life.  I think we all feel that way.  Forty more days of prayer no telling what will happen.  Do we care long as McCain/Palin wins!

Carolyne…Hubby is going to work, so every contract is for a year. He gets time off every 4 months. This is his 2nd tour and the last one lasted 4 years. He was in Kandahar.  he’s an ex Marine, and at 50 when they called afterr 9/11, this was what he could do. He truly loves the troops, and feels that God has called him to serve them. He came home for a year and then they called again. Most guys spend their lives settling for work that they tolerate, and then they retire. He loves what he’s doing…Superintendant over dirt work and transportation on a fire base near the Pakistan border. I miss him and he misses home, but he’s 55 now, and so I told him do what makes you happy, cuz in a few years you’ll retire. And it is weather like here in North Idaho. He’ll be at 5000 ft elevation, so it’ll be cold. Like home.  At the rate things are going with the crazy libs  here…maybe we’ll move to Costa Rica. That is if Russia doesn’t help Chavez take over down there.

Yes…prayer does cause a shake and bake. I know that people are praying all over the US and probably all over the world. So let’s just keep speaking confusion over the libs and Obama’s people. It certainly seems to be working on Biden! he can’t open his mouth without making a booboo. Good grief, can you imagine him as VP? Pray on sister!

Liz: I’m impressed. KBR is quite a business indeed.  Is it dangerous in Dubai?
Your life seems . . . well let me just say, I would love to meet you and talk as I am fascinated and speechless as to how you deal with him so far away.  I miss my daughter like crazy, and she is just 14 hrs away.  We were used to seeing each other once a week, now it will be about every four months.  That has to be hard, I can’t imagine how you must feel.  Just one more question: and I’ll not take up IAC to talk personally, sorry for that.  Do you have children?  I will continue thanking God for a great out come and Obama be defeated.  I will also pray for you and yours.   Maybe some day our paths will cross, cool.  jennyjen would like that as well, I think.  Good night my friends, take care!

Liz,  It will be interesting to see what your hubby’s impressions are going to be of Dubai.  It’s the white slavery and prostitution center of the middle east.  It took over from the famous Port Said in Egypt.  They have to come up with something there as the oil they have is projected to run out in another 20 years or sooner.  I think they probably don’t want to go back to “goat raids” , smuggling and piracy, which they were justly famous for in bygone eras.  Actually, they probably never stopped any of it any way, so when they run out of oil, it’ll just be business as usual.  They’re building the highest dollar whore houses in the world.  They plan to attract all the rich deviants from around the world to party there.  Please tell “hubby” to be careful….the locals are cutthroats.

  • Liz

Caro…we have 3 grown kids, have spent most of their lives  travelling, and a few years on the mission field, so they have understanding of God calling you to do something. Our lives are uncommon, and most people don’t make it…marriage, family. They either go home, or end up divorced. I’m blessed to hve a really good faithful man who loves God and me in that order. We are also pretty fortunate that he has an office over there with a phone that has a Houston phone number. So we can talk often.

Tonto…My hubby is part of the KBR group. So he never really spends much time in Dubai. He says they have too much money and that the tourist thing is a facade. But that terrorist stuff is dealt with very harshly because they love tourist dollars. He’ll be there a few days.  Then off to his job. He almost took a job with the govt. where he would be living in Dubai, but then KBR called and that is the way we felt led to go. I’m feeling pretty blessed right now that he has this job, with the economy so up in the air.

Well so much for Dubai, however the architecture there is out of this world.  I enjoy looking at big beautiful cities, and the large buildings.  When I was a little girl, I got to visit New York, standing below the Empire State Building then looking up,  I realized how small I really was.  After reading about your life Liz, I realize how small a life I have lived.   Like the little parrot in my book, Caroline and Just Me, Amazon.com  Delilah, a little African Gray  lived in a cage for 45 years.  She didn’t need her wings clipped, you could open the door and she wouldn’t fly out, because she didn’t know she could. The story Parrot Talk is one of the stories in my book.  You can read the review at Amazon.com  My story is an adoptee’s recovery of real identity, kinda sorta.  Not sure yet, I am recovered, but I have enough to get by.  Delilah told me in her words, (cognitive logic) not to let this happen to me. In one way I didn’t as you read in my story, but in another I did.  Time Marches On. Too much personal and excess baggage can sure slow you down, and in some cases stop you all together.
I am out of books except for a few, as it was written over a decade ago.  Need to put it on book surge or a way to read it on line.  It’s a short story, paper back only book, and would be a good book for audio.  My publisher sold his half and I sold my half.  2000 each.  Now I’m into promoting my card game.
Betwix Between as always, that’s just me.  The story is about Just me telling the story to Caroline, who is just me.  I go back and get the child of my heart and tell her the story, that was kept secret for forty years.

By the way, if Obama plans to get money from the rich and give it to the poor, he better hurry, the banks are going down.  They are telling people if they have over $100,000.00 in one bank, spread it around.  Is it better to be rich or poor?

Liz when will you and your husband, be able to retire and then live together.  Do you have grand children?  I have four, two boys and two girls.  We had a boy and girl.  So we have stayed even, I like even numbers, except for 3 & 7.
Have a get right day, and praying McCain will, and win the debate.
I don’t see how he stands the pressure?  Commitment for one thing, which is an endurance contest.

hi everyone, i m russian and i live in dubai, i have been here for last 12 years and i don’t believe that crap
if someone did it by mistake and drunk juice in public they will usually tell you not to before doing anything else
i m sure they were informed visiting dubai during ramadan time that they should not do that (drink, eat in public) but i live here and know for a fact you can do that and there are places to do that
i do drink my coffee in my car going to work just try not to do it when staying by the traffic light …….not to offend anyone
as for those two…..i guess they were behaving meanly so thats why were stopped

I have been to Dubai too… I stayed in the Hyatt Hilton. I was amazed that for a moslem country every woman in the hotel disco was a prostitute. (and there were loads of them) mainly chinese, or russian. No native women of course, they wouldn’t be allowed out of the house.
I did see one dubai woman on the beach with her husband she was swimming in the sea dressed head to foot in a black burka with a narrow slit for her eyes
    yeah… a great place!

  • CM

To them, every single non-Muslim woman is a prostitute anyway.

  • Tonto (USA)

elena, do you write in MEY sometimes?  Do you know Esra a ?  I seem to remember seeing that name in there sometimes.

A friend of mine who has lived in Dubai asked me a Question.
Why are ther no terrorist attacks there when to an orthodox muslim the place is a cesspit of depravity?
    When I said I couldn't answer that.
He said that Dubai paid off the lunatics as protection in order to maibtain the status quo.
He said that he had no evidence for this hypothesis but it was a widely held view.
    Hmmh! interesting!
