Gay artist fears for his life on return to Azerbaijan
A GAY artist living in Cardiff has spoken of his fear that he will be murdered in a so-called honour killing if he is sent home to Azerbaijan.
Babakhan ‘Babi’ Badalov, who has been living in Stacey Road, Adamsdown, Cardiff, is currently in Campsfield detention centre, in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, and could be deported tomorrow after failing to secure asylum here.
The 49-year-old’s family are Shia Muslims and believe homosexuality to be evil.
In Iraq, Shia militias have reportedly butchered men suspected of being gay, as well as children sold to criminal gangs to be sexually abused.
Speaking from the centre, he said: “They want to send me back but I cannot go back because they will kill me.
“I don’t know where I will go, I am very sad.
“They are treating me like I am a criminal terrorist for what I have done, but I have done nothing.
“I don’t know what I can do. My solicitor is trying to stop my flight tomorrow.
“My family know I am a homosexual.
“My sister says that I can never step on Azerbaijan soil again because I have shamed, not only our family, but the town I’m from.
“I cannot live there, I do not have any friends there.”
This week supporters staged a protest outside the UK Border Agency’s offices in the capital’s Newport Road after he was taken while signing in there on Tuesday.
He is set to be flown from the UK tomorrow.
Campaigners hope to contact the airline, thought to be British Airways, to urge them not to take Babi as a passenger.
They say he suffers from depression and memory loss after receiving a head injury in a car crash.
Babi has received support from writer and playwright Patrick Jones, Leanne Wood AM, Bethan Jenkins AM, Chris Bryant MP, Cardiff Council leader Rodney Berman and deputy leader Neil McEvoy.
A spokesman for the UK Border Agency in Wales and the South West said: “Our asylum decisions are humane and compassionate and are also subject to independent scrutiny by the judiciary.
“Where unsuccessful asylum claimants refuse voluntarily to leave the UK, we have made it clear that we will take a robust approach to enforcing their removal.”
I have an idea on how he can get asylum granted. All he has to do is start preaching hate, calling for the slaughter of infidels and calling Christians and Jews “the sons of pigs and apes”. The British government would love him, give him a million dollar home and put him on welfare.
