New Fatwa on Yoga in Malaysia

What’s next? going to the gym cause it’s infected with Infidel coodies?

good grief…

(Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) A leading Islamic cleric is calling for a fatwa against the practice of yoga by Muslims.
Mr Harussani Zakaria, a controversial cleric from the northern Perak state, said the government-backed National Fatwa Council would soon release a decree, or ‘fatwa’, which would decide if Muslims were allowed to practise yoga.

‘If it involves any faith or religious elements it is definitely not permissible but if it is just a form of exercise that is all right,’ Mr Harussani said.

‘Muslims cannot practice yoga in its original form because it involves another religion,’ he said in response to a call to ban Muslims from engaging in yoga.

Hmm, wonder if the folks at TurnToIslam agree? According to this thread, there seems to be some conflict of interest over whether Yoga is forbidden.

  • Fat Chance, this Fatwa, gets dumb and dumber. I would not last a day in that kind of crap the Muslims put out.
    It would be me or them, let's get'er done, and be quick about it.

    muslims are not allowed to practise yoga as some of the skills required are just as same like what hindus do during their prayer. so, faith towards god is valued by how much the believers are going to get rid from certain things that can disrupt their faith against god.

    That's a good point.

    But you're very right about the only people with a (slim) chance of talking sense to radicals are other Muslims. Then it forces the argument to stick with the facts, since no one can really be charged with racism, Zionism, or imperialism.

    Pakistan may still have a long way to go (perhaps those death threats to Christians came from supporters of the Red Mosque?), but I find the sheer number of 10,000 people protesting a radical Islamic center to be staggering. And a reason to be hopeful.

    Too bad about the Muslims Against Sharia, though. Maybe they ought to see that link for inspiration.

    Thanks CM,
    <div>   I have spoken to them several times and they mean well but they have no power and are not willing to do what needs to be done and by that I mean....we all know that Muslims who want Sharia will not listen to non-Muslims. So the only people who have any chance, (although slim) of talking any sense to them are other Muslims. So I asked MASharia why don't the go protest against the Muslims who want to impose Islam on the world? They said it is dangerous. Well me using my name is dangerous, so I don't care for that excuse. Then I asked them well if Muslims do not not confront the Sharia loving Muslims how will things ever change then? That was the end of the conversation as they never even responded. So unfortunately they will not accomplish much if anything.</div>
    <div>
    </div>
    <div>Let's just get right to the bottom line. There have been groups like this for centuries, what have they accompished? NOTHING, as the Islamic world is getting stricter and stricter and no other religion has this problem of hate being preached across the world from their followers.</div>
    <div>
    </div>
    <div>"Moderate" Islam is not coming to the rescue and non-Muslims have to face this reality and defend themselves against Islamic takeover. If many Muslims have the same view as you said then why are they voting in terrorist and pro-Sharia groups across the Middle East? Why are they pushing for Sharia in Europe?</div>
    <div>
    </div>
    <div>Pakistan is a sewer, so you will have to do better then that. Christians there were recently threatened with letters to convert or die.</div>

    (The article about Pakistanis protesting a radical Islamic mosque surprised me, even. I didn't know about it until I looked it up.)

    Chris-

    Replying to your concern about moderate Muslims not speaking out against sharia and radical Islam:

    I linked you to a blog of "Muslims Against Sharia" earlier. Don't know if you actually looked through it, but it really does seem to be run by a group of reform-minded Muslims.

    I checked the web, and there don't seem to be many world-wide picket protests against sharia. One Canadian protest I did find included a quote from Mahmoud Ahmadi. The article doesn't specify whether he's a Muslim or not, and I don't want to assume -- but it's probably worth noting anyway, as many Muslims hold the same view:

    "I come from Iran, where Sharia has ruled for 27 years, a country that is anti-woman in the fullest sense of the word," said Mr Ahmadi. "Don’t talk to us about Sharia law, Mr McGuinty. I am coming from a country where marital rape is protected by Sharia law."

    Also, tens of thousands of Muslims in Pakistan apparently don't like radical Islamic mosques:  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6558501.stm

    The evidence is there, Chris. But make of the information as you see fit.

    So the peacefullness of Yoga is a threat to Islam. What happened to "interfaith"?
