FIVE British troops were left dead in a day of hell yesterday, including three victims of a wheelbarrow bomb.
Four Royal Marines and an Army soldier died in separate incidents in less than 24 hours in Afghanistan and Iraq.
It was a grim day for the NATO security mission and the darkest for the British military in over two years.
Three Marines were killed in Afghanistan when sick Taliban extremists tricked a 13-year-old boy into wheeling explosives up to them.
Once the unsuspecting child got close enough, fanatics hiding nearby detonated the giant payload by remote control. The boy also died.
The 11am attack came as a foot patrol was securing a road for a resupply column near the Helmand province hot spot town of Sangin. One of the patrol was wounded.
An hour earlier another Marine was killed in Sangin’s district centre when a mine exploded under a Jackal 4×4 patrol vehicle. One comrade was wounded and another needed treatment for shock.
Twisted
All four fallen Marines were from 45 Commando based in Arbroath, Scotland.
As The Sun revealed last year, Taliban leaders have used the twisted tactic of “mule” suicide bombers before in the area.
In 2007 an eight-year-old boy was blown up in Sangin after insurgents tricked him into pushing a bomb in a wooden cart into a market, killing two police.
A senior Royal Marines officer told The Sun last night: “What the Taliban have done today is beyond sick.
“Slaughtering innocent children and young Serviceman alike shows just how low they will stoop to carry out their campaign of hatred.”
In Iraq meanwhile, a soldier from 20 Armoured Brigade was found dead in barracks from a gunshot wound in an apparent suicide.
In an alarming development it was the second suicide at Basra air base in eight days.
The last time more than five British troops died on the same day was in September 2006 when a Nimrod spy plane crashed, killing 14.
MAJOR Janet Pilgrim, 42, yesterday received top nursing medal the Royal Red Cross from the Queen for keeping her field hospital in Basra going through a fierce enemy bombardment.
At least the Royal Marines are man enough to tell it like it is, calling the jihadists out for stooping so low as to use a child, in their desperation. Of course the multiculturalist idiots in London will no doubt call this a cultural misunderstanding, and find some way to morally equate this to something they did, in the colonial era 300 years ago or more.
