I've read the entire article, and the basic message of it appears to be that Muslims can be as extreme as they want to be as long as they don't plan or support terrorist attacks against the US. The most the US should do to Islamic extremists who aren't a threat to the US is try and persuade them not to be so extreme.

What a load of appeasing rubbish. All Muslims who don't want women to be educated, wish to stone people to death just for having relationships or drinking alcohol, etc need to be defeated by all freedom loving nations.

Let's daydream for a while ............... We have a bunch of radical Pentecostals (or Anglicans or .....) who take a dim view of Muslims because they do not accept Jesus as the Son of God. They consider Muslims to worthy of death because of this, so they embark upon a series of outrageous acts, including murder, against them. Their numbers grow as a result of their "successes", so they train converts in the practices of terrorism. Pretty soon, all Muslims feel threatened, for no-one knows where the next outrage will occur. The Muslim equivalent of Newsweek beseeches its readers to cope with it because Radical Anglicanism (or whatever) "is a fact." Muslim newspapers and television channels do their utmost to ignore or play down the threat. End of daydream.

As long as you don't step on our toes we'll accept the daily murder and mayhem perpetrated on the innocent and put it down to cultural difference.
