Video: Obama expresses his “deep appreciation for the Islamic faith”

TURKEY OBAMAANKARA, Turkey (AP) – Barack Obama, making his first visit to a Muslim nation as president, declared Monday the United States “is not and will never be at war with Islam.”

Calling for a greater partnership with the Islamic world in an address to the Turkish parliament, Obama called the country an important U.S. ally in many areas, including the fight against terrorism. He devoted much of his speech to urging a greater bond between Americans and

Muslims, portraying terrorist groups such as al Qaida as extremists who did not represent the vast majority of Muslims.

“Let me say this as clearly as I can,” Obama said. “The United States is not and never will be at war with Islam. In fact, our partnership with the Muslim world is critical … in rolling back a fringe ideology that people of all faiths reject.”

The U.S. president is trying to mend fences with a Muslim world that felt it had been blamed by America for the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Al Jazeera and Al Arabiyia, two of the biggest Arabic satellite channels, carried Obama’s speech live.

Obama said the partnership between the U.S. and the Muslim world is critical in rolling back what he called a fringe ideology that people of all faiths reject.

“America’s relationship with the Muslim world cannot and will not be based on opposition to al Qaida,” he said. “We seek broad engagement based upon mutual interests and mutual respect.”

“We will convey our deep appreciation for the Islamic faith, which has done so much over so many centuries to shape the world for the better, including my own country,” Obama said.

Obama also said, to a round of applause, that the United States supports Turkey becoming a member of the European Union.

    Dear Mr Obama,

    I watched you from afar as you campaigned with rare skill for the Democratic Party's nomination and then for the Presidency itself. Your victory in the racist election was reward for your tireless rhetoric and agile mind, so the world, caught up in the excitement of it all, breathlessly awaited a new dawn. That dawn has arrived, but it lacks Homer's rosy-fingers.

    Your recent behaviour on the world stage gives cause for grave concern. Your bowing to King Dickrash was a betrayal of everything Washington strove for and for which Americans continue to be willing to die for. That you feltl so humbled and respectful in the presence of a tyrant suggests you have no notion of tyranny. Your slave ancestors behaved similarly towards their cruel white masters, but they were forced to do so, unlike you. When you stand on the world stage you ARE America, and must perform with a dignity that earns the respect and approval of Americans. When you bow to a tyrant, all America bows.

    Your antics in Turkey cause me to wonder if your ascendancy to high office has caused you to lose touch with reality; if your love of office has resulted in your loss of sense of duty. While you say that America is not at war with Islam, you appear to be blind to the fact that Islam is at war with America and has stated so on many occasions. Do you truly believe your silky words will make an iota of difference to the thinking of America's sworn enemies? No, sir, your shameful utterances will fuel the fires of belief in ultimate Islamic triumph. Were your words a cowardly attempt to prevent another Islamic outrage on American soil? If so, you suffer a strange psychology and follow a depraved philosophy. Let me wax Cromwellian to say, "I beseech you in the bowels of Christ: think it you are mistaken." Given your mode of thinking, are you prepared, one day, to forsake Israel in order to appease the Muslim hordes? For as sure as night follows day, Islam's followers will never rest until Israel ceases to exist, so their antipathy towards America will fester until such happens. At the heart of your muddled thinking is the idea that there are moderate Muslims. A moderate Muslim is akin to cancer in remission. I contend that every "extremist" Muslim was once "moderate". Fear these people. On behalf of the people over whom you preside, fear these people. There is no shame in fear, for its recognition results in appropriate defensive measures.
