Police in Bari in southern Italy have arrested two alleged supporters of al-Qaeda who are accused of preparing attacks in Britain and France.
Bassam Ayachi, 62, a Syrian imam with French nationality, and Raphael Gendron, 33, a French citizen are both reported to be resident in Belgium. Their proposed targets included Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport, according to investigating magistrates in Bari, qupted by the news agency ANSA.
Magistrates Roberto Rossi and Francesca Romana said the two men had “planned and organised terrorist attacks and guerrilla actions”. They did not immediately reveal what the targets in Britain had been.
Reports said the arrested men, described as agents of al-Qaeda in Europe, had used the Internet to convey “terrorist messages”. They had been first detained last November on suspicion of aiding illegal immigrants to enter Europe. The investigation into this activity had led to the discovery of a more serious plot to cause explosions Britain and France, the magistrates said.
