White House: Obama Cairo speech inspired Iranian uprising

Obama’s approach to Iran, including his assertion that the unrest there represents a debate among Iranians unrelated to the United States, is an acknowledgment that a U.S. president’s words have a limited ability to alter foreign events in real time and could do more harm than good.

But privately Obama advisers are crediting his Cairo speech for inspiring the protesters, especially the young ones, who are now posing the most direct challenge to the republic’s Islamic authority in its 30-year history.

This is the most despicable, self-serving, and arrogant spin I’ve seen yet from this White House, and that’s saying something. Obama gave a speech, and suddenly the people of Iran discovered that they’re being ruled by tyrants?  Never mind that two weeks passed between the speech and the uprising, and that the very obvious trigger for the unrest was the incompetent manner in which the mullahs rigged the election for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.  Never mind the fact that this President took a full week to even sound like a watered-down Nicolas Sarkozy, let alone the leader of the free world.

    Probably more likely it was the media and better examples of democratic freedom (The USA, UK, etc.) that inspired the people in Iran.

    I'm hoping the Iranian uprising is inspired by Thomas Jefferson - not Barak Obama.

    Obama's love letter to Islam did not inspire the uprising! He must be an absolute narcissist to think that!

    The uprising was triggered by the election and the probability that it was rigged!

    I thought there were some cracks in BHO's polish in yesterday's press conference. It remains to be seen if they heal or widen. I thought it was particularly revealing when he had to resort to saying "I am the POTUS" at one point. He really didn't anwer Major Garret's questions, he was particularly lacking on the one on the 4th of July invitations to the Iranians. He apparantly hasn't considered the implications of not canceling them, or even forgot he extended them. This attempt to claim credit for the beginning of the events in Iran may be another indication of his ego, pride, and arrogance overcoming any good judgement he may have. Also, he may be finding the job is harder than he thought it would be, particularly since he's trying to do so many things at once, while events are moving rapidly everywhere. Looked to me like he could use a smoke.

    Not sure who I despise more - Gordon Brown, my own prime minister, or Obama.

    I think Obama, purely on the basis of that Cop Out in Cairo.
