Saudis to look the other way if Israel attacks Iran’s nuclear facilities?

Now THAT is an interesting question. Everyone knows governments hold low-level, back channel talks frequently. But for Saudi to permit the Israeli Air Force to fly through their airspace en route to Iran is big. It shows that the Saudis fear a nuclear Iran far more than they fear Israel, rumored to be a nuclear power. Guess the Saudis know who the real threat is…

Saudis give nod to Israeli raid on Iran

The head of Mossad, Israel’s overseas intelligence service, has assured Benjamin Netanyahu, its prime minister, that Saudi Arabia would turn a blind eye to Israeli jets flying over the kingdom during any future raid on Iran’s nuclear sites.

Earlier this year Meir Dagan, Mossad’s director since 2002, held secret talks with Saudi officials to discuss the possibility.

The Israeli press has already carried unconfirmed reports that high-ranking officials, including Ehud Olmert, the former prime minister, held meetings with Saudi colleagues. The reports were denied by Saudi officials.

“The Saudis have tacitly agreed to the Israeli air force flying through their airspace on a mission which is supposed to be in the common interests of both Israel and Saudi Arabia,” a diplomatic source said last week.

Although the countries have no formal diplomatic relations, an Israeli defence source confirmed that Mossad maintained “working relations” with the Saudis.

John Bolton, the former US ambassador to the United Nations who recently visited the Gulf, said it was “entirely logical” for the Israelis to use Saudi airspace.

Bolton, who has talked to several Arab leaders, added: “None of them would say anything about it publicly but they would certainly acquiesce in an overflight if the Israelis didn’t trumpet it as a big success.”

Arab states would condemn a raid when they spoke at the UN but would be privately relieved to see the threat of an Iranian bomb removed, he said.

Referring to the Israeli attack on an alleged Syrian nuclear facility in 2007, Bolton added: “To this day, the Israelis haven’t admitted the specifics but there’s one less nuclear facility in Syria . . .”

Recent developments have underscored concerns among moderate Sunni Arab states about the stability of the repressive Shi’ite regime in Tehran and have increased fears that it may emerge as a belligerent nuclear power.

“The Saudis are very concerned about an Iranian nuclear bomb, even more than the Israelis,” said a former head of research in Israeli intelligence.

The Israeli air force has been training for a possible attack on Iran’s nuclear site at Natanz in the centre of the country and other locations for four years.

I really would LOVE to drop a couple of 1,000 pound demolition bombs
over Mecca "by mistake" (oops!) on my way to Iran...
It'd even help the Saudi regime to save face when critized by the "arab street"
for being in cahoots with their hated "Zionist Entity".

Biden said while he was in Iraq that the US would probably stand aside if Israel struck at Iran's nukes, after Israel gives BHO's "engagement" policy until the end of the year to work. Now this from the Saudis. Is reality setting in about Iran after seeing how they treated their demonstrators? Does everyone see now what it might mean for people like them to get their hands on nukes? If it's true, it gives Israel two possible avenues for air strikes to travel, making Iran's defensive strategies a little tougher to figure.

I think the US is wise to stand aside from all of it for a while. The muz know how we feel. The mullahzoids in Iran have been geeked up about the proximity of US troops for the last several years, and have seen from the fighting that the US will chew up and swallow any army that's sent against them. That has caused them to make mistakes when dealing with their own people....who are very, very strongly nationalistic. Islam cannot help, by virtue of being a repressive entity, but to stiffle progress, the ecomomy and self expression. As the regime has applied it, islam is going DOWN, and I believe, many, many people all over the world will breathe a sigh of relief. We've all had it with their crap, haven't we? As I believe, so have the Iranian people.
