Saudi Arabia: Honor killing claims the lives of two sisters

Their crime? They were mingling with unrelated men. And for this offense under shariah law, they paid with their lives.

Saudi religious police blamed in ‘honour’ killing of sisters

RIYADH (AFP) — A Saudi women’s group on Friday blamed the country’s religious police in the “honour” killing of two sisters shot dead by their own brother after they were arrested for mixing with unrelated men.

The Society for Defending Women’s Rights in Saudi Arabia said the religious police had placed the sisters’ lives in danger when they arrested them and then placed them in a Riyadh women’s shelter.

The two women, identified as Reem, 21, and Nouf, 19, were murdered after they left the shelter on July 5.

The brother shot them in the presence of their father who, according to newspaper reports, quickly forgave the son for defending the family’s honour.

But the society blamed the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, or the religious police, for sparking the brother’s anger over his family’s honour by arresting the girls in the first place.

“The hands of the religious police, as well as the brother’s hands, are stained with the blood of these innocent young women,” the group said in a statement.

“These women have not committed any crime to be killed in a such brutal way.”

Under Saudi Arabia’s Islamic sharia legal code, unrelated men and women are not allowed to mix together, and the religious police actively enforce the rules by patrolling areas frequented by young people.

“Arresting women for mingling with (unrelated males) should be stopped because it puts many Saudi women in danger and sometimes (costs) them their lives,” the statement said.

“This act has nothing to do with the religion of Islam or Saudi tradition.”

The women’s group called on the Saudi authorities to charge the brother with murder and also bring to justice members of the religious police involved in the two girls’ case.

I have a problem with the claim the lady makes, “This act has nothing to do with the religion of Islam or Saudi tradition.”. If what she says is true, then why does this sort of thing keep happening, not only in muslim countries but in the West as well?

completely pathetic. very very sad actually, that someone would actually think they could make their family have MORE honor by murdering two sisters that did nothing wrong, except TALK to men that they weren't related to.... what a backwards society.

I can't recall ever seeing an honor killing that doesn't involve Islam, Muslims or sharia law. On the other hand, I see crimes of passion all the time on the media, but no one questions the breaking of the law involved and that justice be rendered. Only in the Muslim cases are the crimes and the criminals looked on favorably in any way. Also, there is no other system of law I know of where family members are expected to be judge, jury and executioners of there own family members. The bottom line is, as I see it, is murder is murder, there are laws against it, even in Muslim societies, and there should be no exceptions to them.

We used to have "honor killings" all the time in this country. They were even made into very formal affairs at times too....we called them duels. The other, less formal form, were called feuds and involved extended families. In our society the concept of "Honor" is very different than the ideas in islam.....but that's because the twisted ideas in islam are considered insane here.

I wouldn't consider duels "honor killings" although they were "affairs of
honor", just a technical distinction I guess, but not murder since both were
armed. Even in feuds, both sides usually went armed, because they were
aware of the situation, so again, they were, technically at least, not
murders. Maybe we should refer to the Muslim version as "honor murders" then. Just
had a thought, do Muslims follow the Ten Commandments? How do they justify
    these murders if they do?

You're right. The distinction is as different as night and day....but then so is the concept of "What constitutes Honor" between the two cultures. Where our ideas are connected to civilization, the muz concern themselves with the mindset of a slaver, pedophile, murderer, and pirate....a savage animal. The 10 Commandments are mentioned nowhere in the koran....evidently one thing the big mo didn't plagiarize. They would go against the mo's game plan anyway. Mo wanted everyone to follow his idea of morality, which, incidentally, followed very closely to that of ancient moon-god worshipers....and that is what islam is modeled after anyway. Good thing he knew nothing of the Aztec/Maya/Inca/Toltec cultures or there would be muz cutting hearts out on altars atop pyramids too.
