Sudanese woman will face flogging for wearing pants

Another day, another woman suffering under shariah law.

Sudan woman journalist to be flogged for ‘indecency’

KHARTOUM (AFP) – A Sudanese woman journalist was preparing to be flogged 40 times in Khartoum on Wednesday for wearing “indecent” clothes, with 10 women already whipped for similar offences against Islamic law.

Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein, who writes for the left-wing Al-Sahafa newspaper and works for the media department of the United Nations Mission in Sudan, was arrested in Khartoum earlier this month after being caught wearing trousers.

“I received a telephone call from the authorities saying I must appear at 10 am (0700 GMT) on Wednesday in front of the judge,” Hussein told AFP on Tuesday.

“It is important that people know what is happening,” Hussein said in an invitation to journalists to attend her court appearance and flogging.

“They will lash me 40 times, and also fine me 250 Sudanese pounds (100 dollars).”

Hussein said she was at a restaurant on July 3 when police came in and ordered 13 women wearing trousers to follow them to the police station.

Ten of the women were summoned to a police station two days later and were lashed 10 times each, according to Hussein, who wears a hijab or Islamic headscarf.

The women whipped earlier this month included some from animist and Christian south Sudan where the Muslim north’s Islamic or sharia law does not apply.

Police have also cracked down on another woman journalist, Amal Habbani, after she wrote an article condemning Hussein’s treatment.

Habbani wrote an article for Ajrass Al-Horreya newspaper following the arrests entitled “Lubna, a case of subduing a woman’s body.”

“I am waiting for a decision,” Habbani told AFP after she was charged with defaming police, a charge which can carry a fine of up to several hundred thousand dollars.

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information said the charge against Habbani stemmed from her claim that Hussein’s arrest was “not about fashion but a political tactic to intimidate and terrorise opponents.”

Unlike many other Arab countries, particularly in the Gulf, women have a prominent place in Sudanese public life. Nevertheless, human rights organisations say some of Sudan’s laws discriminate against women.

What a shock, laws in a muslim country are discriminatory towards women? NO! Every islamo-apologist I ever meet (here on IAC, or in person) insists that islam has elevated women, given them true freedom. And where are the feminists? Why aren’t they shouting in a blind rage about yet another instance of islam brutalizing women?

I don't understand why it is that the international media gets involved in rather minor court cases in foreign countries. These women understood that they were breaking the law. If they didn't like the law, the should have sought a remedy at the Constitutional Court of the Sudan. In as much as they decided to break the law in order to challenge it, they must pay the price for their media blitz. Perhaps after a few dozen lashes with a cat of nine tails, while being tied to the public whipping post will change their minds that if you want to change the law, you must follow the law.

Here we are, Mustafacrap, toiling away to bring the ugly truths of Islam to a wider audience, perhaps making slight headway, when all of a sudden you, a Muslim, turn up and do an incomparably better job than all of us combined. Thank you.

I just found out that this woman is actually Christian. Anyway let's hope the western media expose this barbaric act. The western feminists deafen us again with their silence. Their hypocrisy is disgusting. They don't care about women. It was all about rebellion and money and the "movement". I always hated feminism. If they really cared about their sisters they'd have been screaming at all the outrages against Muslim women. But, er, of course, it's a different culture, different values. It's about diversity...pass me the sick bag.

Southwood,if this woman was a "palestinian" being arrested by Israel,ALL feminists in the whole world would
SCREAM on the top of their lungs against it.

    Feminists are LEFTISTS first,women second.The left is,in a strange way,ally of the muslims,despite the
deep hatred muslims have for anything who reminds them of Communism. It's odd to see leftist folks close
their eyes whenever muslims commit human rights abuses, only to open them when Israel and America
    rightfully responds to muslim violence.

Feminism, therefore,is just a pink façade of the BOLSHEVIKS.

    JEWHAWK,

You are right. 2 years ago I read a book called "What's Left?" by Nick Cohen a disillusioned left wing British journalist. All this hypocrisy of the left, including feminists, ignoring, or more often supporting radical Islam was disgusting him. I also read somewhere else that they were the same after the end of the Vietnam war when most of them ignored the outrages carried out by the Khmer Rouge and Vietcong. Yet these same lefties are now running America and Britain.
    Unbelievable.

    Flogging women?yet another Islamic perversion.
S&M as an institution for Islamic discipline freaks.
Still they've got to get their rocks off some way!

Funkybarfly, you guys keep sarcastically asking: "Where are the Feminists?". You know there are feminists ONLY where most men are cowards about the feminists. Where men are AFRAID to stand up to women. THAT is the only place where you will find feminists.

No country in the world can achieve prosperity without treating
    women as equals.

The way a country regard its female population speaks volumes
about what this country was,is and will be socially, politically
    and economically.

Muslim countries are universally known as socially backward
exactly for the abnormal way in which Islam regard women,a
situation that brings also economic hardships, for women are
    HALF of any country's population.

    Could this situation CHANGE?
    Nope.
    WHY?
    The "holy" Qu'ran CAN'T be re-written,re-interpreted.Whomever
attempt to do so will be considered an apostate,an infidel and will
    be marked to death.

This explain why Islam doesn't belong to the 21th century, but
to the 7th.It's wrong and lewd from its very start, many muslims
are aware of that but just CAN'T do a thing about it.

Thanks for the post KAL EL.This story piqued my interest initially and I was curious to see if this journalist, Lubna Achmed al-Hussein,would eventually receive the lashes by order of court that she wouldn't accept upon arrest.I seem to remember that most of the other "criminals" consented to the lesser punishment of only ten lashes almost immediately in what must be some kind of twisted islamic version of leniency for an early guilty plea.Hussein stood her ground and has now been sentenced to forty lashes.Alas, this is the outcome I expected."Where are the feminists?".I expected nothing from them because their deep-space quietude on the subject of women under Islamic law is well known by now.I hope as many Western journalists as possible take up their persecuted colleague's invitation to cover her court appearance and flogging. The broader community really does need to see what Islamic law means in practice;exposed for the sadistic, sexually dysfunctional blight on humanity that it is.
A strong, educated and heroic woman who had the audacity to wear pants enduring pain and public humiliation for the pleasure of weak and cowardly men with erections under their kaftans.
