Africa: Women in Mali stand up, demand law against female genital mutilation

It is downright tragic that this sort of barbarity goes unnoticed and unpunished in the 21st century.

WOMEN FINALLY DEMAND LAW AGAINST GENITAL MUTILATION

Yesterday, some 700 activists, mostly women, have marched in favor of the introduction of laws to ban the practice of female genital mutilation (FMG) in Bamako. The demonstrators presented the request directly to parliament. The long overdue initiative, organized by the Coordination of women’s NGO’s in Mali, was repeated in other areas of the country, where more women also staged small gatherings. “The rate of FMG in Mali is very high, reaching some 92%” said Nicola Giovannini of the “No Peace without Justice” NGO to MISNA; the organization has been engaged in a vast campaign against female mutilation alongside Malian NGO’s. Giovannini said that in Mali, there is a strong political consensus for a law to ban the practice, but authorities have so far suggested that Malian society itself is not yet ready to penalize this terrible and very established practice. The participation in anti FMG protests suggests that there is an ever stronger – if long overdue – desire for change. [AB]

One can only hope that the government will heed these brave women, and at least make a statement against the practice, if they are unwilling to punish the perpetrators.

If God made the women I really don´t think that God will allowed men or women to change or have any negativ opinion of what God have created. That is that I think and if there is a God I do think that he will be angry of we are doing to what he has done.

This kind of behavior against women is advocated and condoned by their "god" in their "holy" book, the Quran. It's the basis for a "religion" and "culture" that creates "peace and love" through the intimidation and subjigation of it's followers. It's followers become conditioned to think this is normal and right. Whoever created it was smarter than the 7th century shiek he chose to disseminate it. But then, he wasn't perfect either, his book is full of mistakes, so he wasn't a true "god", at least as we'd like to think of Him. He sure left us a mess to deal with.

The whole thing is about power and an attempt to make sub-standard men feel like men instead of the wimpy little turds that they really are. Muz come from a culture so backward that for them to feel strong and accomplished, they need someone to constantly bully.....just so happens that the easiest and weakest that are handy are muz females. And there you have the real story. Pretty pitiful if you ask me. I like a woman that walks beside me and shares the good and the bad of what life has to offer. Anything less is contemptable.

Sewing up vaginas and cutting off labia, is very misogynistic and anti freedom and I for one, don't want to have it in my country; which it already is.
