Yale University and Yale University Press consulted two dozen authorities, including diplomats and experts on Islam and counterterrorism, and the recommendation was unanimous: The book,“The Cartoons That Shook the World,” should not include the 12 Danish drawings that originally appeared in September 2005. What’s more, they suggested that the Yale press also refrain from publishing any other illustrations of the prophet that were to be included, specifically, a drawing for a children’s book; an Ottoman print; and a sketch by the 19th-century artist Gustave Doré of Muhammad being tormented in Hell, an episode from Dante’s “Inferno” that has been depicted by Botticelli, Blake, Rodin and Dalí.

The book’s author, Jytte Klausen, a Danish-born professor of politics at Brandeis University, in Waltham, Mass., reluctantly accepted Yale University Press’s decision not to publish the cartoons. But she was disturbed by the withdrawal of the other representations of Muhammad. All of those images are widely available, Ms. Klausen said by telephone, adding that “Muslim friends, leaders and activists thought that the incident was misunderstood, so the cartoons needed to be reprinted so we could have a discussion about it.”

Cross-posted from T&P, where I have added the documentary “Bloody Cartoons” that shows there was no misunderstanding. In fact, the whole issue was used by Wahabbies and other fundamentalists (Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran) and allies (Venezuela, Russia, China or North Korea) to push for the non-binding UN resolution on defamation of religions (already passed) and to ask for a binding UN resolution on the same subject (which has not been passed already but they are trying to). It also shows that Western countries did not really support freedom of speech or their defense of it was very shy. 3 years later, it seems we continue by the same path of fear.

The Islamic world needs to grow up and learn how to take criticism. (And how to take a joke)

The Islamic world has had 1300 years to "grow up". They don't want to "grow up". If anything, they have gotten worse. They think the rest of the world are the ones with the problems, and they are ready to make us live their way. Nothing is funny to them because they think their souls, and ours, are at stake. Since we don't live by Allah's rules, we're sinners, and they're doing us a favor by killing us and saving us from committing more sins. On the other hand, if they die trying to kill us, they're rewarded. It's like a mathematical equation that adds up for them, but adds up to hell for us.

    Appeasement...What's next?

    I know.

    Flying a WHITE FLAG.

It's a defeatist stance. It will embolden the muslims, proving that the
Western Civilization will bulge at any muslim pressure or threat.
Showing how coward and weak we are, won't bring safety.Au contraire,
    it will bring more danger.

The muslims now will DEMAND anything they want, knowing that at the
end of the day, they will succeed.

This is one of the saddest things I have read. This is YALE, for God's sake - one of the bastions of scholarship and excellence and freedom of expression on the planet. Yale, mighty Yale, that fortress of sanity has succumbed to the odious forces of misguided liberalism and, at a stroke, lost the precious credibility it toiled for so long to achieve. How its past peerless educators must be turning in their cold graves! And for what gain?

    That's a very good question.
  • Same story went on for Sherry Jones and her book "The Jewel of Medina". Random House wanted to publish it - got cold feet almost right away. Reason: A female historian, Islam expert Denise Spellberg, had warned that the book could provoke violence and terror. She went so far that she contacted some Muslim scholar (don't remember his title) that something was going on with this book in order to slander Islam. Bjarke Larsen, Pressto (Denmark) published it. He was faster than Free Press Society. Today Sherry Jones is very worried about free speech and does many things to defend free speech.
