The violence in Afghanistan continues, and a French soldier has paid with his life. Nine of his compatriots were wounded in the attack.

Afghan Bomb Kills a French Soldier, Wounds Nine

One French soldier was killed and nine others were injured in a bomb attack north of Kabul on Friday, officials said

In a statement, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has “strongly condemned” the attack.

According to the French president, the soldiers were attacked in Kapisa province 60km north of the Afghan capital.

A provincial police official said the incident happened when a convoy of the troops passed by Shokhi, a village east of the center of Kapisa, Mahmood Raqi, at around 8am.

The French leader reaffirmed the commitment of his country toward Afghanistan, saying France is determined to continue to work on the re-establishment of peace and development in Afghanistan.

Nearly 3,000 French soldiers have been stationed in Afghanistan, most of them in Kapisa and Kabul provinces.

The latest death brings the total number of French soldiers killed in Afghanistan to 30 since the Afghan mission began in 2001.

The deadly incident occurred last year in August outside Kabul, where 10 French soldiers were killed after Taliban insurgents attacked their patrol.

Article found on Quqnoos.

I believe the article has a typo, in the last sentence. It mentions an attack last year outside Kabul that claimed the lives of 10 French Soldiers. I believe it is meant to say/read “deadliest” as opposed to deadly.

The coalition forces cannot win in Afghanistan. To think otherwise is to ignore history and to be blind to the Islamic mind as well as to the fierce inter-tribal hatred they seem to enjoy. Afghans despise the presence of foreign infidels, no matter what sacrifices they make for the good of the populace. No matter what, they see themselves closer to the Taliban than to those trying to save them from these murderous blackguards. Why? I don't have to answer that, do I? Afghanistan cannot and will not have democracy and peace and development thrust upon it. The country will go its own way, and the West can burn in hell. Every life lost there is a life squandered for no gain. Every dollar spent is money down the drain. The Taliban will not be eradicated. Kill every one of them and more will rise to take their place. Send 10 million American troops there, and you will only delay the inevitable. Time to start thinking like a Muslim, folks! America disastrously misread the Vietnamese mind, involving itself in a war it should never have been part of, and it's doing something similar in Afghanistan. The American people ultimately did not allow America to win in Vietnam, and much the same thing will happen in Afghanistan. They will sicken of it because it will become clearer with each passing day that the cause is a hopeless one. It has nothing to do with valour or superior military materiel. No amount of these will ever win the hearts and minds, as they say, of the Muslim Afghans.

Fighting an invisible enemy, who wear no uniform and disguises themselves
as "civillians" is indeed, a tall order to make.
Instead,I 'd advise the coalition to concentrate their military efforts to
erradicate the SOURCE of the Taliban's money : the OPIUM production.

Bring some farmers from America,Canada to create huge wheat, corn and whatever
crops in Afghanistan under military protection, teach Afghans to deal with it.In the
    long term it could work.

    About democracy,I agree.It's not about voting only,but INSTITUTIONS's building.
    Muslims don't understand the concept.

At the end of the day,America will have to accept a SAUDI ARABIA-like regime
    in Kabul.
Alas,ANYTHING is preferable but the Taliban.

Jewhawk, why haven't the poppy crops already been destroyed?

Wheat, corn and whatever crops under military protection? That means the continued presence of infidels. No good.

Muslims DO understand democracy. That's why they fear it.
  • JEWHAWK
Odyssia, the "poppy culture" in Afghanistan must be so vital to the local
warlords that some sort of deal should've been made between them and
    the Infidel/Crusader expeditionary forces.

It goes like this: "You,drug-addicts and drug traffickers ragheads may
grow your poppy IF you don't rebel yourself against Kabul's New Order"

The Taliban apparently didn't reach such a chivalrous agreement.I wonder
    why.

If the poppy remains as a staple of Afghan economy,America is only WASTING
preciously needed Dollars.Tons of it...FOR NOTHING AT ALL.

As soon as the last infidel/crusader soldier leaves Afghanistan, all the hell will
break loose again. The Taliban knows that.Washington knows that.Karzai knows
    that.My dog knows that.

Agreed JH you are quite the pragmatist!Your proposals seem the most sensible solution.
But the Talimals would of course kill the farmer/instructors.
    It is the Islamic way.
  • funkybarfly
    You are right,Beejj.
Military intervention will never solve the root cause of Afghanistan's problems, simply because the root cause of Afghanistan's problems are the Afghans themselves. The Taliban didn't just appear one day out of thin air, they are the PRODUCT of backward men and women,of Muslims!
