In Baghdad today, Vice President Joe Biden seemed to downplay the threat of an Iranian missile hitting the U.S.

“I think we are fully capable and secure dealing with any present or future potential Iranian threat,” Biden told CNN.

“The whole purpose of this exercise we are undertaking is to diminish the prospect of the Iranians destabilizing that region in the world,” Biden said. “I am less concerned — much less concerned — about the Iranian potential. They have no potential at this moment, they have no capacity to launch a missile at the United States of America.”

Asked about the Vice President’s statement, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said, “don’t think anybody has sugarcoated the notion that we believe that their illicit nuclear program poses great security concerns for us and for many…in the international community. I think what Vice President Biden was talking about was exactly the renewed and updated intelligence assessment that led the very same people in 2006 to recommend, one, architecture and configuration, two, based on that updated intelligence, recommend to the president something different in 2009, again, partly based on capability and technology.”

Let us pretend I am an Israeli fearful of Iran's nuclear capability. My country might cease to exist at the press of a few buttons. Fear consumes me. But along comes Joe Biden to say Iran is not a threat. That's the great Joe Biden whose track record on the world stage over decades is impeccable and without blemish. A man with a demonstrable superior grasp of the world political stage. He says: No worries, folks. Suddenly my fears evaporate. Wasn't I silly?

I have been a Christian pacifist most of my life. I am stunned to say that I do not see a way out for Israel if she does not take out Iran's nuclear capacity now. Right now. The possible destruction and loss of life is too great. I am not a strategist and am utterly ignorant of the history of warfare. But it seems to me that there is no time left.

He might be right about an Iranian missle hitting the US, but what about Israel? They're much closer, and a nuke or two or three doesn't have to be all that accurate in a country that small. But wait, I guess Israel will be ok if they just stop the settlements, Iran won't have any reason to attack them after that, no matter what they say about wanting to destroy Israel no matter what, they don't really mean it, do they?
