New York muslim who beheaded his wife likely to claim distress as a defense

Earlier this year, a muslim who had opened up a TV station here in the US to counter the negative stereotypes of muslims living in the US. It is ironic that he proceeded to behave like so many muslims in the ummah, killing his wife for not being a good little muslimah.

N.Y. man likely to claim distress in wife’s beheading

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A man accused of beheading his wife at the television station the Pakistani-born couple founded to counter stereotypes of Muslims is likely to claim emotional distress was behind the killing in hopes of avoiding a murder conviction.

Muzzammil Hassan, 45, is scheduled to be tried in January on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of 37-year-old Aasiya Hassan. A psychiatric defence would allow jurors to find him guilty of a lesser charge of manslaughter, according to Hassan’s attorney, who made his plans known during a pretrial conference Friday.

“Extreme emotional disturbance is not an insanity defence,” attorney James Harrington said afterward. “It’s related to the state of mind of the person at the time.”

Muzzammil Hassan had been served with divorce papers a week before his wife’s body was found stabbed and decapitated at the offices of Bridges TV in the Buffalo suburb of Orchard Park, where the couple also lived. Hassan was arrested after walking into the Orchard Park police station Feb. 12 and telling officers his wife was dead.

Assistant District Attorney Colleen Curtin Gable has said the prosecution’s case would be built on alleged admissions, forensic evidence and “strong motive evidence.”

On Friday, she asked Erie County Judge Thomas Franczyk to bar the defence from introducing psychiatric evidence, saying Harrington had taken months longer than he should have to reveal his trial strategy.

Franczyk put off ruling on the prosecutor’s request after Harrington said funds for psychiatric testing were being held up by civil actions surrounding Aasiya Hassan’s estate. Muzzammil Hassan’s assets have been frozen while the civil matters, including a wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of the couple’s two young children, are negotiated.

Muzzammil Hassan has two other children from a previous marriage.

If convicted of second-degree murder, he could be given a life prison sentence. The sentence for first-degree manslaughter is up to 25 years.

The Hassans started the Bridges TV network in 2004, saying they wanted to counter negative stereotypes and media portrayals of Muslims and provide programming for the growing Muslim-American population.

Umm, yeah, because whenever I feel distressed, I immediately think of beheading my girlfriend…

  • Yes he was trying to convince Americans Muslims are a peacefull religion.There probably are but he has tried to decieve us.He has learned how to blame someone or something for an excuse for his HONOR KILLING and yes America it does happen hear but the State run media refuses to call it what it is.He should when found guilty get the death penalty and let him see his 72 virgins sooner then he planned.Like alot of murders use the insanity plea and get away with it sometimes I'm sure he'll have alot of Lawyers and the ACLU on his side.Well we'll see what happens.

    I bet you're correct. Saudi arabs have always looked "light in the loafers" to me. They sure act faggy. Mo was a swithch hitter and liked to dress in Ayisha's night gowns too......so mohammad was a cross dresser at the very least.

    Distress as mitigating circumstance for a beheading, eh? Good thing he was a moderate. What would he have done if he were an extremist and his woman distressed him?

    I hear you on the beheading Kal El, that's the first thing every guy thinks of when thinking of killing their girlfriend. Look how common they are in this country. Come to think of it, the only other beheading I can recall is when Lizzie Borden used the axe, then again, she didn't behead her parents, she just hit them in the head with it, if it was her, there's still some doubt she actually did it. Anyway, I couldn't find any other cases of beheadings in the US besides this one, and since they were Muslims, I have to consider that a factor. She was also stabbed, but the spectacular nature of a beheading seems to be obscuring the probablitity that this was an honor killing, she was dishonoring him by filing for divorce. Whatever his defense is, you can count on it being taqqiya. If we followed Biblical law, he'd be stabbed and beheaded if convicted, an eye for an eye, etc. There are some good things in the Bible, ya know?
