As a scientist, the words Nobel Prize mean something almost sacred to me. They immediately conjure up such names as Einstein, Pauling, Curie, Bohr, Feynman, Fleming, Bragg(s), Rutherford, Thomson, Millikan, Sanger, Perutz and a host of other giants who changed our world for the better. Then we had Steinbeck and Churchill, whose luminous prose elevated us to ecstasy. Perhaps it is a comparatively straightforward matter to bequeath the prize for physics or chemistry or medicine (perhaps not), for there is something concrete and even immediate about them. Literature? Not so cut and dried. Opinion plays a far greater role. The Peace prize? What is it for? For those who strive for peace? Surely not. There is something far more nebulous about it. Was Mother Teresa rewarded for her efforts to bring about world peace, or for her efforts to improve the lot of the starving and downtrodden of a city in India? There's a difference. Was Yasser Arafat seen as a campaigner for peace and the brotherhood of man? Did he subdue his religious and territorial ambitions in order to pursue a greater cause? If so, please educate me. Did Jimmy Carter advance the cause of world peace through his actions to caponise America and foster Soviet military supremacy? Did the Nobel committee frown upon Reagan for his successful efforts to redress the balance and thus defuse the world of its nightmarish scenario? Did they shake their heads in anguish when the Soviet Union collapsed as a result of Reagan's foresight? Would a modern Neville Chamberlain and his cronies be lavished with Nobel Peace Prizes for their blindness and cowardice? I believe they would. Would those of Vichy France be similarly lauded? I believe they would. Will they bestow next year's prize upon Robert Mugabe? They have the runs on the board to do such a thing.<br><br>Obama took office on January-the-something of this year.
