House Republicans accuse CAIR of planting “spies” as interns on Capitol Hill

Four House Republicans are accusing a Muslim advocacy group of trying to plant spies on Capitol Hill.

Republican members of the Congressional Anti-Terrorism Caucus said the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) have tried to plant “spies” within key national-security committees in order to shape legislative policy.

Reps. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.), John Shadegg (R-Ariz.), Paul Broun (R-Ga.) and Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), citing the book Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld that’s Conspiring to Islamize America, called for the House sergeant at arms to investigate whether CAIR had been successful in placing interns on key panels. The lawmakers are specifically focused on the House Homeland Security Committee, Intelligence Committee and Judiciary Committee.

“If an organization is connected to or supports terrorists [and] is running influence operations or planting spies in key national security-related offices, I think this needs to be made known,” said Broun, who sits on the Homeland Security Committee. “So I join my colleagues here today in calling for action.”

  • Unfortunately, the republican leadership in Washington is unwilling and lacks the backbone to figure out a way to truly investigate things like this. Where are republican connected lawyers willing to start lawsuits? When will the republicans figure out that their public image is in need of a drastic overhaul? The RNC has done almost nothing to capitalize on the growing discontent of the public with Obama and his administration. 2010 elections may be a great opportunity for republicans to gain grown lost in the last election, but at the moment they have done next to nothing to postion themselves to take advantage of an electorate that is dissatisfied with the current congress and president.

    There's been plenty of reason to investigate CAIR before this. Only people unaware of the true nature of Islam trust any Islamic organization. Of course, CAIR immediately plays the race card in response, counting on the ignorance of the accusers that don't know Islam is not a race, or a religion. It's a political organization. At the risk of sounding like a McCarthyite, no less dangerous than Communism at the height of the Cold War. Investigate away, who knows, it may actually do some good.
