TURKEY: 953 WOMEN MURDERED IN FIRST 7 MONTHS, MINISTER SAYS

(ANSAmed) – ANKARA, NOVEMBER 9 – Statistics made public by Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin reveal that the number of women murdered in Turkey has drastically increased (+1.400%) in the past seven years, at an average of 4.5 women per day, 31 per week, as pro-government Today’s Zaman reports. Minister Ergin provided the statistics in response to a formal inquiry from Democratic Society Party (DTP) deputy Fatma Kurtulan regarding the number of charges filed in connection with cases of domestic violence, the number of convictions resulting from these cases and the number of women murdered since 2002. The justice minister subsequently announced statistics on violence against women and the number of women murdered between 2002 and 2009. Ergin, discussing steps the government has taken to put an end to violence against women,noted that 66 women were murdered in 2002, whereas this figure rose to 953 in the first seven months of this year.     Why the drastic increase in "honor" killings? I don't see figures on other countries, but there do seem to be more cases in the media. I don't like to speculate, does anyone else have an explanantion? How about you Muslims?

    The reason could be the slight increase in religious attitudes in Turkey over the past 7 years. This could stem from the fact that the latest Turkish government (that of Abdullah Gul) was voted in around 7 years ago and is known in Turkey as being the most Islamic government to date. It is the first time the Prime ministers spouse wears a headscarf for example. The government has always claimed to uphold the secularity of Turkey (split between government and religion (i.e. no sharia but a democracy), and has done great things to boost Turkey's economy out of the recession it was in in 2000/2001.

    On the other hand many Turkish people have noticed a slow increase in religious attitudes over the past few years (headscarves, various laws, many anti islamic fundamentalist protests form Turks (with rallies numbering in the millions).

    The increase in honor killings likely are in the more rural eastern villages and poorly policed districts of eastern Turkey where (uneducated) families perhaps think that there will be no retribution by this particular government.

    Women are killed all over the world. True. Most societies have laws which they enforce in order to punish those who victimize women. Islamic societies have laws which require the victimization of women and societies which make heroes out of the perpetrators. This is quite a different, barbaric phenomenon.

    In Islamic societies the weight and tendency of the law is to enslave women and punish their every impulse toward freedom. If a woman refuses an arranged marriage, Muslim males feel entitled to kill the woman for daring to assert her right to govern her own destiny. You Muslim men buy and sell your daughters to each other and threaten them with death for resistance. In Turkey the city of Batman is called "suicide city" because there have been so many suicides since Turkey passed a law requiring honor killers to go to jail. The fathers and brothers pressure the daughter who is to be killed to murder herself so that they won't have to go to jail. So many desperate women comply, driven to suicide by their own families. In Paris social workers note that in Muslim homes young women aged 12 to 25 have a tendency to "fall" out of the window to their deaths. These ruthless Muslim families kill their daughters so frequently that any Muslim girl who complains to social services, gets a new identity and safe housing on her word alone.

    I go into this subject that has been explained many times before so that you will not try to equate the Western problem of putting criminals in jail with the Muslim problem of refusing to admit that killing women is a crime. The level of evil in the Muslim society is stunning. You will murder your own family when ever they get in your way. The law will permits it or turns its head away.

    If you have remarks to make on the essential evil of killing young women who resist their parents or Islam, I would love to hear it. Muslim hands are covered in the blood of their own children. You have some explaining to do.
