Indonesia: Muslim clerics claim 2012 Movie a “Provocation Against Islam”

Hollywood’s latest doomsday offering ‘2012′ has caused a storm in Indonesia, with conservative clerics condemning it Thursday as a ‘provocation against Islam.’

The country’s top Islamic body, the National Council of Ulema (MUI), is divided over whether or not to issue a fatwa or religious edict against the film. One local branch has already done so, to little apparent effect.

‘The controversial things about the film are, first, in Islam doomsday should not be visualised or predicted, it’s the secret of God,‘council chairman Amidhan told AFP.

‘For the common people, the portrayal of doomsday in this film could distort their faith – that’s what I’m worried about.’

He also complained that the film showed mosques being destroyed but not churches, despite sequences depicting the Vatican collapsing and Rio de Janeiro’s monumental Christ the Redeemer statue crumbling to pieces.

‘The film shows that everything including Kaaba (Islam holiest shrine) and mosques were devastated except for churches. The film is a provocation against Islam,’ Amidhan said.

‘The Indonesian film censorship body should have cut part of the scene on the devastation of mosques or the Kaaba because it hurts the Muslim people.’

    Beejj, you should know that I am going to jump on your comment. The photo is a photo and represents "the photo". If i spend my time I can get pictures of Christians with "death to Muslims", or just clansmen. I can get pictures of Philipinoes hammering themselves to crosses, or chauvenist Hindus attacking Christians in Assam or I can get a picture of Robert Spencer or Wilders and say - that is a bigot!

    Photos are photos, they are not excuses. Yes we can talk about events and does that represent the whole, or how bad and how much real effect on Muslim populations does radicals have. That is and sounds more logical and is a debate of value. But as far as I am concerned, the photo represents just that event and it is without context.

    Beejj, you should know me better than that. If you have read any of my posts then you will know that all I am interested in is that when images are given that they are subject to the context of the subject and if they are not or they are used as examples of anything else that it is inaccurate.

    I have seen enough images that are documented and explain the situation, the evilnesses baseness that humans can achieve, both Muslims and non-Muslims. Remember Srebrenica as much as other locations and without knocking down one small amount of the importance of 9/11, tell a widow or a mother about that event and they will sympathise and then they will ask - how many died?

    The ugly side of Muslims is dangerous, I have never denied it if not I have also pointed it out. What I am not intereted is making more (or less) based on emotive BS or inaccuracies.

    I suggest that "Slay those who insult Islam" is quite clear in its context, as is the placard promising Europe its own 9/11. Just remember that when I write to you I am also writing to all Muslims who might read my words. The word "emotive" carries bad connotations, although I am not entirely sure why. Without emotions we are not human, and while emotions should ideally be under control, expressing them is not, by definition, inaccurate or invariably undesirable. True, my stomach turned over when I read those placards and yes, I felt a moment of rage, especially having just read the words of that buffoon who proclaimed Islam is a religion of peace and who then told us to go to hell, so I felt justified in commenting upon his bare-faced lie. I was driven more by reason than emotion, but even if my post had been penned in white heat the messages contained on the placards tell it like it is, as they say. I saw another clutch of such placards when last night I watched the vast gathering of supporters of the present Tehran regime on TV last evening, when my opinions were strongly reinforced. You know the sort of thing: Death to America; Down with Britain; US The Great Satan, and the like. (Indeed, the last of these bears thought. The country, imperfect though it is, which, above all countries, values individual freedom and which gives away billions of dollars of aid and which brought an end to the slaughter in the Balkans is the Great Satan?? Strange stuff, Islam.) For you to urge us to ignore such placards is an insult to intelligence. For me to comment upon them is not evidence that I am emotionally out of kilter.

I am a Muslim and I find one thing each man (and woman) has in common....we just do not use our mouths properly all the time and the result is acerbic, racist, pejorative and blasphemous comments. All are very emotional. As a Muslim, I respect your religious belief, whatever it may be because that is what Islam teaches the Muslims to do. That's mentioned in the Holy Quran and the best chapter in which Allah.describes this is in chapter 109:

    Meanwhile, those who claim to be Muslims but do things the way they please for their own interest or by how they interpret the religion (not according to the traching of the Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h) will see how they will fare on the Resurrection Day in the Hereafter where the followers of all prophets and messengers Allah mentions in the Quran (those submit themselves to Allah, the one and only God that is refered to by different names at times of different prophets/messengers) will be brought back to life, judged, rewarded for good deeds and punished for misdeeds.

    Very interesting stories, would you mind citing your source(s)? I'd like to examine them for myself so I can decide their validity for myself. The English versions of the Koran are bad enough the way they are, but I understand that any translations are subject to debate. The Bible's translations are also subject to debate, and the Bible is open to criticism for the books that were left out, as much as for what is included. Even when translations are considered accurate, they are open to interpretation, which is why all religions are divided into sects. The 3 major religions all claim interaction with flesh and blood beings, angels for example, during the times their texts were written, but none can show where they are today, or explain why those interactions don't happen anymore. 2012 depicts the destruction of religious symbols for the shock effect and for the publicity they knew the resulting contoversy would create, but they couldn't anticipate the reactions of Islam, despite trying to by removing some Islamic content. It just shows there's no predicting the future, at least for human beings.

    I make no comment on "ibelieveinPEACE" but I will certainly consider Tonto's version of what is Islam and the Qur'an to be something of his own. I have read the Qur'an, in Dutch, French and Arabic, not that it makes a difference - and Islam for my part and one quarter of this world, a religion that seeks peace and love as much as the other two Abrahamic relgions. That you read anything else in it simply is your problem, but I suspect you have not read it.

    As for Kamal Ataturk, great General, strong leader and the one man whom has single-handed f*cked and confused up the culture, aspirations and unity of a great country that I had the pleasure of living and working in for two years. Thanks to him a third of Turks considider themselves Europeans and they run the country. Two thirds do not but have no say. 70 per cent of the country are rural and mostly poor and are considered uncivilized and second-class citizens with no say in the running of the country, the military have the final word in governing the country and around 85 per cent of the country have been denied their right to expressing their religous beliefs for fear of reprisal from the hard-line secular military dictatorship that is Attaturk's Turkish paradise. A great country with great people, but without their obvious Turkic and Islamic heritage all confused and thus keepin the country from being really unified and a major player in the region.

    I'll agree with your evaluation of Turkey. Note that the uncivilized and barbaric part of Turkey is a islamic shithole. Islam proves over and over that it is an instrument of repression, and the hinterlands of Turkey are living proof of that. I had a friend named Semi in college who had been in the Turkish army and he described a scenario in the countryside as you describe. Don, a US Army translator, also said that the Turks are fanatically loyal to their government....even standing and shouting the words to their national anthem as it plays before the movies in theaters. Ataturk was a brutal man in some ways, but he used the only language that muz understand.....brutality. As you know, in islam "Me against my brother, my brother and me against our father, my brothers and my father and me against....." That's even an old proverb in islamic lands isn't it? And I have read the koran....the most disjointed, screwed up mess I ever saw. Plagiarism was readily apparent (if one is well read) although the idiot Bedu couldn't even get the story straight most times. Hard line islamic clerics are always trying to get the upper hand....that's one reason why hard line secular governments are so harsh with them....and the reason that hard line secular dictatorships are the only successful governments have a chance at civilization in islamic areas.     Turkey, since your one that assumes that a country is a sh*t-hole because it is Muslim is another one of those generic crap-statements that simply does not stick for two reasons. One, not all Muslim countries are Sudan or Afghanistan which those "small arorgant armchair dudes" think they are and second, they forget that half of the developing world that are sh*t-holes are not Muslim. Turkey is in many aspects a great place and I travel there at least three times a year and part of my business is based there. Its problem is the opposite of what you said, they have had their culture and their religion taken away from them because a military-based minority wanted it to become Europeanized. That is fine except they are not and never will be Europeans and they sacrificed their identity - culture & religion. That they had a very good, moderate and quality Musim background, without the Shari'a and followings that included the embracement of Sufism. That the unifying cultural and religion identity that gave the majority of rural population a part of the prosperity all was taken away.

    Tonto, face it, your understanding of the reality of what is the live of the average Muslim, life in the Muslim world and what you think is Muslim, Islamic or even Jihadi is lower than pathetic. Your constant "old world" depiction and phrases makes that abundantly clear.

    I am suprised that at least you have aknowledged that what some of what you depict is not everywhere and then you fall down again and again with what is simply generalized crap. Your vulgar slurs only tells me more about you than what you ever would even begin to think you know about my life.

    My goals here have been same, time and time again, I do not deviate at all and never have. Simply put, your the perfect example of just constant mindless bagging that has nothing to do with reality. That the assumption that the entire Muslim world lives like sev en dangerous countries and six more with ultra-conservative laws. Ignoring the 43 nations are not anything like you and others like to imagine and I do not give a flying f*ck if you want to pontificate from your amchair pretending (and failing miserably) to be world-wise. The only reason I continue is that 1) point out to those that are willing to listen that by being so miserably ignorant you are in fact failing then to understand the real and important dangers of radicals, extremism and terrorism, and 2) to try and unerstand what factors are there that make people so easily prone to ignorance.

    I like this blog, because behind all the extremely far-right rhetoric, John still is trying to understand things. I certainly to write to much, that is my style and with english as my third language it is also an excercise in improving my language. As a owner of a company and now back at work, you will be certainly happily that I will not be writting everyday and so you can continue your "old-fart/pretendd tough guy" farce based on a reality that exists only in a thankfully very limited number of small minds.

Much of the west is becoming educated about the ways of muz scum we have coming west nowadays to infest our cities and countries. The muz that came years ago came with a much different attitude...they were running from the hard-core ass wipe muz you read about in the news now a days. They were, for the most part, pretty nice people. I taught some of them to hunt and fish here in the states. I've heard what they had to say about islam, and even read the koran (that was a piece of crap as far as books go). The guys coming over here now are real assholes and it's just a matter of time before they start getting shot instead of just getting their asses kicked...and yeah, they step out of line and American boys will kick their butts. One muz even wrote a warning on MEY about immigrants from Cuba will cause one to "disappear into the Everglades" for disrespecting Cuban girls. Scumbags like that become alligator food down in Florida....pig food in Michigan. Americans are different, and maybe a bit arrogant....get used to it ......we think we deserve it. People have a choice when they come here....become one of US or your life will be difficult here. Sharia and islam creates shitholes....you'd never understand that cause that's where you have always been and have the mindset of a slave....born of those who have been slaves for ages. That's why so much of Europe accepts socialism so readily. Europeans riot to get the government to do FOR them. Americans demonstrate to tell the government to get the hell out of their way! Any country in which a man isn't free to do what he wants, when he wants and has strict rules for everything from dress, hair, diet, prayer, religion....is a shithole and not worth spitting on. And I guess that sums up your wonderful world of slavery.     What a load of BS. I saw 2012 this morning and yes it showed the kaaba and a bunch of people bending over so their arse's were in the air and their shit running into their brains, presumably at a mosque but it did not visualise either being destroyed, they were only on screen for couple of seconds each and were not even mentioned at any further time after. I do see and understand the problem of the doomsday scenario portrayed in the film though from all religious perspectives in that it is man who predicted the end of world and therefore became gods themselves determining when the world dies which is wrong as it is only known to god when this will happen, This argument then falls completely on it face because my vision of the end of days, to me, means nothing will survive not even micro-organisms and as there are survivors at the end of the film, how can this really be the end of days which is written and described in various different religious texts.
