In 2002 when I first moved to Morocco there was a radical wahhabist (he is now facing execution as being one of the masterminds of the 2003 bombings in Casablanca) and he published a fatwa that eating at MacDonalds was unclean – even though MacDonalds carefully follows codes and has 12 outlets in Saudi Arabia. Three things happened in succession. 1) More people turned up at MacDonalds so they made more money. 2) the Cleric was arrested as it is illegal to issue Fatwas unless by the School of Jurispudence – the Maliki School is here in Fez, and 3) from that day one a Big Mac is referred to locally as a MacFatwa! I have even seen women with hijabs asking for one. That for me says it all.

Turkey is in many aspects a great place and I travel there at least three times a year and part of my business is based there. Its problem is the opposite of what you said, they have had their culture and their religion taken away from them because a military-based minority wanted it to become Europeanized. That is fine except they are not and never will be Europeans and they sacrificed their identity – culture & religion. That they had a very good, moderate and quality Musim background, without the Shari'a and followings that included the embracement of Sufism. That the unifying cultural and religion identity that gave the majority of rural population a part of the prosperity all was taken away.

Beejj, you should know me better than that. If you have read any of my posts then you will know that all I am interested in is that when images are given that they are subject to the context of the subject and if they are not or they are used as examples of anything else that it is inaccurate.

I have seen enough images that are documented and explain the situation, the evilnesses baseness that humans can achieve, both Muslims and non-Muslims. Remember Srebrenica as much as other locations and without knocking down one small amount of the importance of 9/11, tell a widow or a mother about that event and they will sympathise and then they will ask – how many died?
